Using Localism for Fun and Profit... The Lake Charles "Flag Lady..."

By
Real Estate Agent with New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County

On this wonderful Fourth of July Weekend, I wanted to share two really cool pictures that I stumbled upon yestereday while reading the blog of one of the Active Rainers on my subscription list.  Her name is Marilyn Boudreaux.

Marilyn is a Realtor in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and her blog is named Lake Charles Real Estate LagniappeMs Boudreaux currently has a great Localism Post up on her blog titled Yes I am the "Flag Lady."  By the way, for those of you who are not familiar with the term "Lagniappe"... is it a local Louisiana word... the broad definition of which means a "gift."  It is pronounced "LAN-yap."

Localism, as many Active Rainers know, is a way that we can truly establish ourselves as being an integral part of the community in which we live, and even better... as an "expert" in the very neighborhood we call home.  From the pictures below, it is pretty obvious that Marilyn loves her work as "the Flag Lady."

Marilyn lives in the Canal Place Subdivision in Lake Charles, Louisiana... and has established a great identity among her neighbors... as "The Flag lady."  Every Memorial Day and July 4th, Marilyn puts out American flags at the front entrance of Canal Place to welcome folks to her neighborhood.

What a great way to use the Active Rain Localism feature to let all your friends an neighbors know that you truly care about where you live, and that you'd rather live right there... in Canal Place... than anywhere else around.

Once in awhile, Marilyn even takes the extra step of lining each street with individual flags at the mailbox of each Canal Place homeowner.

I have read quite a few of Marilyn's blog posts... and what Marilyn has done with many of her posts... is establish herself as the Realtor to call when anyone in Canal Place has a need for a real estate expert.

Both Marilyn and I wish everyone a happy, safe and wondrous Fourth of July Weekend.

Miss BzyBee:  Placing flags in the neighborhood might sound corny, but so what is wrong with "corny?"  Yes, it was great, so now you can plan to do the same at the end of August when your next chance comes.

Jon:  Thank you for your kind words.  When I saw the original Flag Lady" post that Marilyn wrote, I wanted to share what she did with those who also read my posts.  And, in some ways, what I did follows a book that Loreena Yeo wrote a post about... "The Go Givers."  Writing the post seemed to be a nice "gift" to Marilyn.

Marilyn:  It was my pleasure to write this post about you and your Flag Lady tradition.  And yes, Active Rain can be a special place.  I bet you enjoy having the neighbors "watch you" while you do your thing.  I can hear them now.  "Uh oh... there goes the Flag Lady again."  Way cool !  And you are very, very welcome.

Cynthia:  Putting out flags on the Fourth is something many have done over the years, but Marilyn seems to have added her own Louisiana Lagniappe flair to it.  And a Happy Fourth to you, as well.

Lou:  Marilyn's effort deserved being shared.  And she appears to be doing a great job with it.  Have a great Fourth of July Weekend.

Sharon:  Above and beyond is the way to do some things, and Marilyn has done it well, here.  It is such a positive way to have her reputation as The Flag Lady do the "knocking on doors" thing for her.  In fact, there was a post I read earlier today about that very thing... "knocking on doors."  This... is better.  By far.

And when I saw her post... how could I NOT write this post and share it ?  Have a Great Fourth.

Roger:  Thank you so much for your kind words.  Just think what this world would be like if everyone, everywhere, could do as that young man did in the Pay It Forward movie.  I have also just finished reading a book called "The Go Givers" which tells a similar story as that young boy did.

Yes, I think everyone should read this post... Marilyn's work should be seen by more folks... AND... it's a great example of Localism.  And... thank you so much for suggesting it as a Featured Post.  Very, very nice of you.  <smile>

OMG I was just thinking of  Pay it Forward and was going to comment and you did it for me Karen Anne!  As a matter of fact, I just wrote a new blog post  sharing about paying it forward with genuine when it comes to our clients, its not so much a localism post as a heartfelt post :)  (I just like happy endings)

WOW thanks Roger! a suggested featured post.  If Karen Anne gets a gold star I'm going to be so excited!

Happy Fourth of July to you Karen Anne!  This is a great post pointing me to Marilyn, "The Flag Lady", too! I think I will become the Flag Lady next Independence Day as I was thinking how our 12"gates" in the subdivision would look so festive with flags there.

Marilyn:  Perhaps the maxim GMTA... Great Minds Think Alike may be true in this instance.  I loved the movie Pay It Forward, but it was SO sad at the end.  It was such a great movie, but the sadness at the end, even though I know it's coming, makes it difficult for an old "softie" like me to watch.

And yes... having Active Rain make this a Featured Post would be nice for BOTH you and me.  Have a great Fourth... Flag Lady.  Will your daughter be home to enjoy the day with you ?  Hope so.

Roger B:  Except for the times when I have a frozen chicken in my hands, I am a great believer in the concept of "paying it forward."  After a while it just becomes "automatic."  Something that I do every day that has become part of my life.  Actually, on many days, it is the highpoint of my day.  And, kind sir, thank you for your Roger B Gold Star.  Cool graphic, my friend !

Mary:  And a Happy Fourth of July to you as well.  I am guessing it is nice and cool, and sunny, up in the mountains in Red Feather Lakes this weekend.  What a great setting.  And yes, I think you'd make a great Feather Lakes Flag Lady.  This coming Labor Day, Monday, September 6th, might be a great day for you to give it a try.  Take care...

Karen Anne, I forgot Labor Day! Great idea.  I was going to go for Veterans Day, but I envisioned snow covering up my little flags in November :-)  'Twas sunny and 77 degrees yesterday, but today it is very cool, and cloudy.  Since most of the fun was yesterday, I've noticed several campers are already heading home today, and imagine some fisherman have moved from the shore to the fire in their cabins :-)  Thanks for the Labor Day idea, at least one of us has her thinking cap on today!! :-)

Mary:  I try, I really try... to have at least one "Great Idea" a year.  And... if you putting out flags on Labor Day qualifies as a "good idea"... that brings my goal of one-a-year... to be current as of 1987.  This means, of course, that all I need is 23 more "Great Ideas" by the end of the year... and I really WILL be current... as far as averaging one per year.

Snow in November, huh ?  But seventy-seven yesterday, that sounds about right.  It has been in the eighties here the last few days, but before that, it was in the high nineties.  But... with humidity around 30%... honestly, it just doesn't seem "hot."  It really doesn't.  And that is me saying it... as a Northern from Cleveland.

Fishing ?  My idea for that... is to find a tree somewhere with a fairly close view of the lake, and spreading a cushy blanket down, leaning up against a tree, and reading one of the many books I've been meaning to get to.  I lead a VERY... exciting life, as you can see.

Thinking cap ?  Nah... I'd much rather wear a "thinking scarf."  It doesn't mess up my hair... <smile>
