Day two of our family hikes to learn, have fun and get some exercise took us to the Columbia Gorge about 40 miles outside Portland near Bonneville Dam. Now, this was our choice for out date today as it was our 17th wedding anniversary.

Family Photo @ Wahclella Falls Trail

Now this wasn’t too difficult of a climb even with a 6 year old and we even saw kids younger than that making this trek. It is a mile to the falls and back and I do have to say well worth the hike, especially if you like to take pictures. If the kids weren’t starting to get hungry, we could have easily stayed another hour or two and taken hundreds of more pictures.

Now, when you get close to the falls there are two paths, one up and one down, it really doesn’t matter which one you take, they are both about the same distance from the falls and are equal in hike-ability. Once you get to the falls, you can take pictures of the falls or you can stay a little below the falls and let the kids play in the water, which I can tell you was a blast for them.

But, there was something that they we didn’t know about or we would have bought a couple small flashlights. Just off the path by the pools, there is a tunnel that goes back about 50-75 feet. Not easy for adults, but very easy for kids to fit into. But, we did see adults making the trek back. (Thank you to the kind gentleman who lent my kids his flashlight so they could go back)

So, if you are looking for a wonderful little 2 hour to 4 hour hike. (If you are taking lots of pictures) then I suggest you check out Wahclella Falls as it is amazingly beautiful and a great family outing.

As much as I hate the rain for taking pictures, if it wasn't for the rain, I couldn't have gotten shots like these.

Hi Todd,

That part of Oregon, actually all of Oregon is a picturesque wonderland.  I move from near Seattle and it was always a goal of my family to spend at least a few days in Oregon every year.  GO HUSKIES!!

Hi Todd-

Columbia Gorge is an awesome place!  The waterfall shots are frame worthy.  It's now on our bucket list.  We too have wilderness camped and hiked on wedding anniversaries and birthdays!  A couple of times we even jumped the gun on heading to the mountains waking to snow covered campsites.  Just brought more adventure and excitment :)

Best regards from the Q

Don't you count your lucky stars, Todd to live in such a beautiful state?  I am thankful EVERY DAY for having the blessing of living in Orygun!!! There are many many treasures and sharing them with the AR crowd and taking us along for the ride is truly a pleasure. (And I didn't even have to pay for gas!)

Todd - what a fun way to spend your anniversary with your family.  Beautiful falls and a great hike.  We love to go to Fall Creek Falls State Park in Tennessee about 3 hours from our town.  It has several campgrounds, resort, pools, lakes, campsites and lots of wildlife.  There's an area where you can hike about 1/2 mile down the mountain to a beautiful waterfall and swim under it.  Our kids LOVE it!

Happy Anniversary and thank you for sharing!

Todd,

Your trips reminds me so much of whenj Brenda and I took our kids camping.

Especially the water falls because we not only took our kids to Taquamanan Falls, but I remember camping there with my parents!

Your kids will remember this forever! So will you, my Mother mentioned it a few weeks ago and that trip was 54 years ago.

That is one of the few great things about all the rain we receive and the Pacific Northwest. All that water has to go someplace and results in the best waterfalls and the world...

I concur with you - both great hikes and especially with younger children in the group. Without our darn rain, as Paul mentions, we wouldn't have the beautiful green backdrop and lovely waterfalls. Happy Anniversary - a day late. It was my kind of "date."
