What did you say your name was???

 Opportunity

How many times have you been introduced to someone and forgotten their name a few minutes later? Would wearing a nametag make you more memorable? Would wearing a nametag make you more approachable?

I just read through John Souerbry's post on "Why I don't wear a nametag" and I was reminded of a young man who makes a business out of wearing a nametag...Scott Ginsberg. Scott has been dubbed "The Nametag Guy" and he has been wearing a nametag for 3,532 days straight. Scott has given over 400 presentations to over a quarter of a million people and his thinking would lead one to believe that wearing a nametag could be a good thing. A really good thing!

Scott stumbled upon a revolutionary idea some years back... that wearing a nametag made him much more approachable. Now Scott tells his story to the world. He has been featured on various shows including 20/20 and is traveling the globe sharing his insight with individuals and CEOs.

So what does all this mean to you and me? As realtors, I think being more approachable is a good thing. It is my ambition to meet people all the time and if wearing a nametag makes me more approachable then I'll take it. The reality is I want people to know who I am and what I do. Then I have an opportunity to service and help them get what they want. This may be worth repeating..... My purpose is to help people and if people do not know who I am or what I do, how can I possibly help them?  I DO NOT want to be a "Secret Agent".  How bout you?

Scott's writing is enjoyable and a little off the wall. Some of his one liners are  "Be interesting.   Be unforgettable.   Make a name for yourself.   Give people permission to talk to you.   Market yourself daily.  People buy people first.   Create encounters that otherwise would not have existed".  Wouldn't we all do well to consider these thoughts?  Don't you love the idea of creating encounters that otherwise would not have existed? We are in sales and that is a people business. So you guessed it... the more encounters the better!

As Scott would say "Your nametag is your best friend".  So I leave you with that. You can see more of Scott at www.Hellomynameisscott.com

Well, something to think about. Not sure yet if I'd wear one everyday in my profession but not a bad idea for some.

I definitely don't wear a name tag all the time (quite frankly, and maybe I'm missing the boat but I don't always want to be approachable). I should think about doing it more often though...

Susan, I do resist wearing a nametag. It brings visions of cattle that are tagged for identification. Doctors, Dentists, Physicians, CPA’s … have yet to see one wearing a name tag … unless they are wearing a lab coat. I would prefer not to be a walking billboard … it feels desperate and cheesy to me. For those that do … may the force be with them.

Great idea . . . then if I forget my OWN name I can just look down!  I actually think name tags do create attention and often start conversations.  Even if you don't want to wear a company logo tag, a simple decorative necklace or pin with your first name will serve to trigger people's memories.  Some time ago,  I took a knitting class.  There were ten women in it and one of them wore a gold necklace with her name on it.  I still remember her name and face today although I don't remember the others.
