When prospective buyers come to Jamestown, Tennessee to look for horse properties near the Big South Fork National Park, I always tell them that Fentress is a "dry county" so they can bring their favorite adult beverage.
Curiously enough, you can buy beer so, if you like a cold one, that's no problem. If you enjoy a glass of wine in the evening or a mixed drink, that's another matter...although there is a winery in Fentress county where they make and sell wine. Go figure! Otherwise, visitors need to BYOB if they're driving or, if they fly in to Knoxville or Nashville, they need to stop en route at a liquor store in a county that isn't dry.
For residents, it's common to go to someone's house for dinner or for some casual get-together with your "bottle bag" in hand. It's kind of an unspoken rule that you don't go to someone's house and drink up their booze when re-supply isn't immediate.
I'm an easy keeper because I arrive with my bottle of merlot in one side of the bottle bag and a wine glass in the other. My friend and riding buddy, Renee, drinks rum and coke so she has a collection of ingredients including her mixer and some limes. She's found a secure way to transport her bottle and everyone here has a good laugh the first time they see it sticking up out of an oatmeal box!
