Well, the dead and a few home inspectors anyway.
I am talking about crawl spaces again. If crawl spaces were not homes for the dead, they would not be made the height of a coffin-----or as cozy as a coffin----or as dark as a coffin. On a recent coffin inspection, I was greeted by a swarm of blue bottle flies -----a good indication that “something” had recently died. Judging by the number of flies present, it was not likely that it was a mouse or a rat either.
The smell was not as nice as the roses in the garden outside. I was sorry I had taken the time to smell this crawl space. I never did locate the carcass but, given the obvious activity of raccoons in the space, I am guessing it was likely a recently deceased ring-tailed bandit----and the bottle flies were just doing their job. I sure am glad I am an inspector and not a bottle fly. I am also thankful that I have always stopped to smell the roses along the way-----that is how we get to counteract all that stinks in our lives. Charles Buell, Seattle Home Inspector
