The 10,000th trip on Nice Ride Minnesota, Minneapolis' new bike share program, was taken only 20 days after its June 10th launch... way to go, Minneapolis! Now the city named America's most bike friendly city also has the country's largest bike sharing system!!
When we we out walking in downtown Minneapolis this weekend before a Twins game, a bike kiosk near the stadium was full and other downtown kiosks had only a few bikes... just as would be expected since the stadium was the 'hot spot' of the moment.
Nice Ride is intended for short trips under 30 minutes... pick up a bike when you need one, ride to your destination and drop it off at any station in the system... then pick up another bike when you need it again at any bike station.
At a cost of $5/day or only $60/year it is quick, easy and affordable! Because Nice Ride is intended for short trips to keep the bikes in circulation for widest use, there is a trip charge if you keep a bike for more than 30 minutes. Sometimes, especially on a leisurely weekend, a trip charge may be worth it...
Wondering where to find the nearest Nice Ride kiosk? Check the online interactive station map, which displays not only locations but also the number of bikes and docking stations currently available at each one. And, yes, there is a mobile app for that as well.
The current Phase 1 Plan of Nice Ride calls for 1,000 bikes in 75 kiosks in downtown Minneapolis, on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus, and in surrounding commercial areas, including Uptown, Lyn-Lake, Midtown, Seward, Dinkytown, Cedar-Riverside, the West Bank, the Warehouse District, and Old St. Anthony. 450 of those bikes were on the streets in 58 stations the end of June, with bikes being added daily as demand increases.
Riders are also waiting for the addition of more stations. In the words of Nice Ride Minnesota itself, "One of the best problems that a small non-profit can have is folks in the community wanting us to expand!"
