RealestateBlogsites vs. Active Rain

Someone who is not a fan of Active Rain mentioned realestateblogsites.com  I am not familiar with realestateblogsites.com are you? I know it is part of MyST.  I know NAR has a blog on realestateblogsites.com. It's got to be a great place to have a blog.

Not a fan of Active Rain? Are you a fan of traffic?  Here's a comparison of traffic from Alexa.  The blue line is realestateblogsites.com The red line is activerain.com

In search of a blog for your real estate business?

They're everywhere, they're everywhere!

There's Typepad, WordPress.. lots of Active Rainers have a blog on Blogger / Blogspot which is Google, the sites are very easy to set up look nice, have limitations.  Many REALTORS® blog on Bloggingsystems.com Internet Crusade has RealTown Blogs, Point2 is going to have blogs soon I believe. Mary McKnight's RSSPieces offers blogs designed for real estate.

Try a blog on realestateblogsites.com or another system but take some advice from someone who knows about traffic, Mary McKnight.

Mary McKnight shared this for her RSSpieces Blog

The breakdown of marketing ROI as a percentage of total traffic:

Active Rain Participation:                           16%
Real Estate Voices syndication services:      9%
Pinging services:                                      5%
Carnival of Real Estate:                             1%
Blog commenting:                                     8%

Even if you write a blog on another blogging platform don't short change it, activerain.com is the place to be. Active Rain will bring traffic to your blog.  Active Rain is growing... Not a fan of a particular Rainer?  Avoid 'em.  Active Rain is growing... over 8000 members now.
Active Rain is a blog and so much more.  Who's been asked to talk at Inman Connect in January?
" Part of my personal exitement comes from the fact that I just got invited to speak at Inman's Real Estate Connect NYC on the subject of "how online social networking can lift real estate."

That's it Dan.... Alexa can be distorted because the less geeky the visitors to  a website the less traffic is reported. It is done via the Alexa toolbar. Not that AR is geeky... not that geeky is bad. Geeky is gooooooooooooood.

Thanks for this info, Maureen!  I've been gathering things to write more towards consumers, and will use the RealTown blog I've set up for that, but seeing the traffic on AR, I'll re-think using some of that info here on my blog as well.  Looking forward to additional traffic, however I can get it!

Thanks again,
Ann

Wow, Maureen.  Couldn't have said it better myself!  You're right, AR is a great investment of time.  It is important to note that you do have to use AR to drive traffic back to your website.  Remember to always include links back to your site and have alead capture tool on your site.

Thanks for the comments Mary and Ann.

Ann: Keep reading Mary McKnight's blog...and watching what she does. Watch what the big real estate blog do... there is lots  to learn but it can be fun. Don't be overwhelmed by juggling all the details...  I have changed my plans re: how to use Active Rain a time or two..

Mary: I am slapping my forehead over " Remember to always include links back to your site and have alead capture tool on your site. " Should you put a link to your blog in every entry?  and 'lead capture tool' I have to go spend more time on Rsspieces.com

I don't like blue lines....They don't pan out! I'll stick with red lines that bring in traffic :)

Thanks for the information Maureen!

I am real concerned about companies making blog platforms and communities just for real estate agents.  Once upon a time the same thing happened with real estate web sites which is why they all look the same and are not as good as most other web sites. Now I fear the same will happen with blogs.  We will be told we are special and our needs are different.  Real estate professionals will sign up becuase they don'e know any better and instead of being leading edge like we are today we will be pathetic like we are today.  I know this is a little off topic.  You are right about active rain it is a good place to be.

Thanks for the info. It's great to have some data, since given the number of places one can blog it is hard to know what works best. I have blogs on several places as I have been trying out other sites (heard aboiut ActiveRain last!) to see which is easiest to use, offers the most functionality, etc.. As Mary points out when writing to consumers I always include links back to my website adn try to capture as many folks as possilbe. Still work in progress.

Gotta love charts and graphs. Too many times on the web an unsupported opinionated statement is taken as fact. We need to ask 'Is this really true? Is this consistent with my experience of this issue?' And knowing where to get great data and evaluate it is a big help too.

I'm not so talented with the charts and graphs as Maureen, but was convinced of the value of Active Rain when I searched by a topic and my two week old ActiveRain blog came up in the first 5 slots.  The creators are doing the right things to get us placement!

Paula wrote  "Alexa is worthless - I would take anything from Alexa with a grain of salt.  Means nothing. "

What site do you recommend Paula to use instead of Alexa?  Yes Alexa sucks but what's the alternative?

Thanks all for the comments.  Do take Alexa's stats with a grain of salt... and if you know of an alternative for measuring traffic let me know!  Alexa's site itself tells you it is skewed.

Maureen _ I agree with you - AR is a great platform for Real Estate agents to use.  Not only does it help for the traffic boost - but I would call it an essential for new bloggers to get thier feet wet.  It is free, easy and you gain a ton of knowledge from AR.  I vote for AR as president!!

"... I am real concerned about companies making blog platforms and communities just for real estate agents.  Once upon a time the same thing happened with real estate web sites which is why they all look the same and are not as good as most other web sites. <<<

Indeed - you are absoltely right about this and your comment is very insightful. I'm not an expert in real estate and have little historical perspective concerning the industry, but I do see that most every real estate website (especially those provided by a service firm) is a cookie-cutter knock off at some level - where's the innovation?

How do you combat this issue?

At MyST we take this aspect of services very seriously and believe that branding (always baked into our services and pricing) is one way to avoid the cookie cutter look. We also [recently] embarked on new services that provide high degrees of custom (active) components that are also baked into our product and unique to each real estate firm's business blogging objectives. Here are some examples...

  • example - notice the embedded quotation block. It was created in 5 seconds for this post and automatically links to a contact page for the realtor.
  • example - the MLS search component was added, formatted, positioned in the text and links to the MLS search for this blog post in 3 seconds.
  • example - positioning and leveraging photos is a big deal for realtors. This example demonstrates how a custom image can be sized, captioned, linked, and formatting in a post in about 10 seconds.
  • example - this example is more subtle - note the Featured Real Estate Developments navigation section on the upper right of the blogsite. This section is not created or managed manually - it happens automagically when the author tags a post. This additional meta-data about the real estate development allows this author to shape content services relative to her own real estate offerings. The automatic links achieve many things including better useability for the visitors as well as deeper understanding of the content by search engines. You may have heard of a Blogroll? This is a smart "PropertyRoll" - smart in a sense that it doesn't polute the blogsite with links that are irrelevant and only displays those links when appropriate.

These are just a few of the examples that we believe are important to provide unique services to our customers and necessary to avoid the cookie-cutter solution.

>>> Real estate professionals will sign up becuase they don'e know any better and instead of being leading edge like we are today we will be pathetic like we are today. <<<

There is clear evidence that many real estate blogs are heading in exactly that direction, but you must also accept the fact that not everyone can afford to have a completely customized blogsite. This is one reason our services are considered "expensive". In fact, they aren't, but the perception is that most people can do all this stuff on their own.

But like many other things in business, some business people choose to employ cheaper services - that's not necessarily bad. Some agents drive their clients around in a Lexus - others choose to do that with a first edition Ford Focus (great car - no disrespect intended). Are some of them choosing to transport their prospects in a pathetic automobile? Perhaps - certainly by my standards it's pathetic. ;-) But the same can be said about all technology choices.

Bill  Thanks for the examples.  It was interesting to see... now I will go see if the Real Living blog is using those features on their blog.

Real Living is not using these features because they are still being tested and evaluated with search engines. We have a very small beta test program on these at the moment. However, Real Living is using a different sort of capability that is relevant to the comment - a seamless integration between their blogsite and their press room on their corporate site.

Essentially, automatic blog posts are written for every press release they publish - no humans are involved in that process - just another thing we do to help businesses get more value and greater benefit when they use Real Estate Blogsites. And the value is apparent - notice how their Blogsite and website dominate search results for Onboard LLC (a recent press story). While theior corporate press room doesn't rank for a recent story about podcasts, their blogsite is #2.

The choice of blog platforms depends on what you want to do with your blog! While AR is certainly a viable social networking platform, it doesn't allow the personalization or uniqueness of other platforms.

I have features on my realestateblogsite that others don't because I tend to ask for the impossible and get it sometimes, so as a result I'm allowed to beta test some of the new toys. I'm sure they'll release these new features to the general users as soon as they're sure that us beta testers are done whining, complaining, and breaking them, which are the designated duties of beta testers.

Seriously. I've been getting a lot of attention from my blog lately, resulting in client calls and free press. Granted it's not all because of the blogging platform (you've gotta have content!), but the platform certainly helps. Google is picking up new blog posts VERY rapidly (within 30 minutes or less) which is a bonus to visibility.

Linda: Welcome back.  Real Living (the company I am with)   uses blogtopsites with the company blog and that is the blog they are now recommending we use.  Or offering for us to use.  This entry was written right after Real Living introduced the company blog but berfore the blogs were offered to agents.

I have visted your blog.  I know Linda Davis also uses a blog  from the company.  I read the Real Living blog, I am a lot more familiar with the company than I was at the end of October. The agent who was not a fan of Active Rain had been an Active Rain member, quit, was looking for a new blog platform,  came back to Active Rain, has a second blog.

I have two non Active Rain blogs so I don't see me starting one on the platform the company is pushing but I did make an inquiry via our intranet yesterday for some information. As part of a presentation at the Columbus Board of REALTORS® in May I get to talk about the different blog platforms so I am madly collecting info for that presentation.

There is a great blog that Bill French did last fall where he compared RSS Pieces Blogs, The Tomato Blogs and Real Estate Blogsites.  It got kind of cRaZy in the comments but it have some useful comparison.

oooopers: should say it has some useful comparisons.

I want to thank you for your comments above - your open-mindedness is truly appreciated. We understand and agree that Real Estate Blogsites (REB's solution) is not ideally suited for *every* real estate business, and it's refreshing to be able to engage in debate about what is ideal for specific situations.

While there are many blogging solutions available - some free, others much more expensive - each business must consider the true cost. In my view, there are costs even with free solutions, so you just have to weigh those costs with your business objectives and resource constraints.

Thanks again, bf.
