This was a post i found interesting.. It is true we need to make sure we are not hidden.
If I wanted to call you right now, and just had your name and/or company name, could I find you?
"WELL OF COURSE!"
Not so fast. Before you answer, google your name. What comes up? I hope a website dedicated to you (as in your own personal site). Or at the very least, your company's website with your contact info.
Think that's a ridiculous request? Read on for a #FAIL moment.
An out of town agent called the office Friday in urgent need of MLS data. He has a buyer looking at several houses, and no access to our MLS. He found the listings on realtor.com and knows one of them is our listing in house, and wants me to email him all full MLS data sheets. He left his name, office name and cell number.
I call back. His cell goes to voicemail. I leave him a message asking for his email address and I will certainly email him the info. I have 15 minutes before going to my next appointment. I call his cell a 2nd time. It goes to voicemail, and I tell him I must leave the office soon, so please call back with his email.
Meanwhile, I start the hunt. I google his name. A half dozen sites pop up, from Trulia and Zillow to others, and neither one has a direct link to him. No cell phone, no email. Just "contact me" form that we all know well. I search 3 pages in then quit.
Next, I google his company's name. It's a major franchise, so no problem, right? Oh hell, I'll say it here -- it's ReMax. It's a few hours away from our location and several references pop up ... including one that is the company's direct site. Now here's a HUGE FAIL.... I click on the company's website link and ... it goes to a placeholder site! You know, one of those sites that says the name is available! Oh my God. The company is either out of business, or let their domain name expire or ... whatever. That is huge. Totally embarrassing. I go back to the google search and click on a few more links (like area MLS page that they belong to) with no more info given. I have no company phone or email. Brilliant, guys. Way to go ReMax.
Meanwhile, I check to see that the Invisible agent has once again called into the office. He's leaving messages in general mailbox, even though my 2 messages to him gave him my direct extension. He also left messages in agent boxes, with the same request. He must be pretty desperate, I guess, that he's just dialing and leaving messages. But if he had listened to my voicemail carefully he would have learned my direct line and by now he would have the info he needed.
On general mailbox he left his email, finally. I emailed him the data sheets he needed, and have not heard another word from him since Friday.
Lesson here: google your name, please. Does your own personal site come up on page 1? I hope so. MAKE IT EASY for people to contact you. Is your email on there? Cell phone? Direct line? Fax?
If a consumer wants or needs to find you, can they? And no, listings on realtor.com, trulia and zillow are great but only if they point right to you. Don't make people search or they might give up.
