Is your profile photo outdated or unprofessional?

After I recently updated my profile picture on ActiveRain, I was surprised at how quickly I began receiving positive feedback about it. AR friends told me how much they loved the new photo, and it got me thinking…

Do professional photos make a difference? Do the photos matter if they’re professional or not?

In my opinion, yes. The photo I originally had up didn’t look too bad. It wasn’t professionally taken, though. In fact, I needed a photo of myself immediately one day, so my assistant grabbed the camera and just started snapping away as I stood by a blank wall in the office. Ta-da! I had my default photo and used it for EVERYTHING.

But two years later, I decided it was way beyond time for an upgrade. As luck would have a photographer, Julie Jacobson, joined the Phoenix Business Connection Network Group. 

I finally made it out to her studio Mimi Jae Photography and we had a fun photo session that resulted in professional photos that far surpassed the quality of my older ones.

I've realized that people actually notice when your photo has changed from an outdated portrait, to a current, professional photo.

So, what do you think? Does it come off as lazy or unprofessional if someone keeps a photo up that’s old on their profile? Is it OK to have an informal, casual photo of yourself even on your Facebook page if you use it for business, too?
