Why not approach your home renovation in New England the same way a locavore approaches buying ingredients for a meal?  "To find the best local products," says Niko Horster, a project manager for builder O'Hara & Gercke, of Wilder, Vermont, "you have to get to know your community."  Basically, the startegy is to go out and search for it.

Here are some ideas to get you started:

1)Stone and Tile

New England's geology provides several stone options: Marble comes in white and dark green. Slate is available in green or plum. New Hampshire granite has a salt-and-pepper appearance.

2)Timber and Wood Flooring

To find local materials, start with vendors certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Even the largest lumberyard chains now sell FSC-certified wood. For help finding a store near you, see fscus.org.

3)Furniture

There is an abyundance of tables, chairs, entertainment centers, cupboards, and more made from reclaimed wood from many small companies.
