Special offer

I wasn't offended

I, however, was thrilled.

Those who follow me regularly probably know that occasionally I'll have some extra time on my hands and just want to do something kind of quirky.

July 4 was one of those times.

I decided that in addition to making my daily minimum 11 comments (yes, 11), I would create an Independence Day graphic and see how many blogs I could leave that graphic in as a comment.

The graphic looked like this:

Happy Independence Day!

I got to 208 blogs on July 4 and left that graphic as a comment, so if you got one, well, it was just me being quirky.

This morning while making my blog rounds, I visited a blog where I had left that graphic. Interestingly, the blog owner had taken MY graphic from MY comment and inserted it directly into HER most recent blog post. It looks like this, with specific identifying information cropped out:

Blog post

I was thrilled.

It does beg the question, though, as to who owns the content of a comment? The commenter, or the blog writer?

I got one Russel, and I thought it was terrific.  Hope you do that for all the holidays.  That person should have asked for permission to use your work.  Now that you have said it is OK to use it I may save a copy of it to use next year.

Russel, Love your graphic, If I had received one I woudn't have thought to re-use it elsewhere.  I'm with Denise #8 on this.  Not sure what to think. Who owns comments, the blog writer or the commentator?  Thanks for your post.

Wow, Russell.   May I save one for next year?     I LOVE it!!!!!!   You are the most generous person.  I do agree, if anyone would like to "steal" any of my photos, they are welcome!

Russel....Your graphic was perfect for celebrating the 4th.  Having it used by someone is a compliment.  However, asking permission or giving credit would not have been a bad idea.  Just my opinion.

I was also one of those graced by your picture comment.  It's flattering to be copied, but I side with those that say it would be nice to ask first before re-using it.  Either that or give attribution.

Hmmm...asking the wrong sister for copyright/permission to use advice...does the graphic belong to the universe...blog-o-verse, Active Rain, Zoe....if you don't mind...it doesn't matter...if you do....or want to protect what you do....best to go to copyright 1 & 2 school...hmmmm

I loved the graphic too! Personally I don't care who owns what - but then look what happened to the Native Americans when they took that attitude towards land

Russel-I was of the notion that the commenter owned his or her comments, guess I hadn't put enough thought into it.  It is a great graphic and I would have loved to use it too!

Hi, Russel. I was one of the lucky 208, too. Whoever used your graphic should have "lifted" it from someone who sleeps more and is less observant!

Russel, the "quirky" idea was a phenomenal way to spread the joy of the Holiday.

Thanks

Wow that was a LOT of blogs you visited in one day. WOW again.  I loved  your graphic, but I wouldn't have used it without asking permission first.  And I think I would have asked the person who did nicely to not use it in her post, but that's just me.  I'm an ask permission, not forgiveness person.

Hi, Russel:

I saw your graphic--thanks! But I would have been pissed off if I'd seen it on somebody else's blog without mentioning where it originated.

You're a better man than I!

Cheers,

Robin

Think that's Great!  I'd take it as a compliment myself! - as long as it's not habitual... but I would thinkg asking for permisson first would have been very nice!

Hey, everyone!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

I'm following up on these older posts like this one to see if anyone had any questions or if I really need to respond to anyone's comments.

I will read all the comments and respond to any that need a response, but since this post is rather old, rather than making comments here in my post to each and every one of you, I'll just let everyone know that I have read all the comments and if there are any questions, I'll answer those in comments below this one. Otherwise I'll simply post this comment and then head over to your blogs soon to visit and do some reading and commenting. I hope you'll have a nice welcome mat out for me!

Don't forget to let your cat come out to play with all the other ActiveRain kitties. Your cat-friendly dogs can come, too!

If you need a great cat book, get yourself a copy of Peg Silloway's The Cat Lover's Book of Days.

Hope all is well with everyone.
