There are many blogs and articles about how to blog.  Often we can learn as much from blogging blunders as we can by reading the how to articles.

Here is a list of what I call blogging blunders.  Interestingly enough most of them come from looking at some of the real estate blogs that have made various top 10 and top 500 lists around the country.

1.Blogs with out blogrolls.  A blogroll is a place for links to other blogs.  Blog ratings are in part determined by how many bloggers have links to your blog.  Bloggers are more likely to give a link if they can get a link.
2. Blogs that do not allow for comments.  Blogging is social, not a static web site.  Bloggers should comment on other blogs and allow comments on their own blog.
3. Bloggers who delete comments that expresses an opinion that they do not agree with
4. Real estate blogs that are filled with self promotion.  Generally speaking people do not surf the web and seek out advertising.  They are looking for information and a blog is a great opportunity to give information and establish credibility.  Some may think that talking about themselves and providing pictures is giving information.  I would argue that a blog has to go beyond that to hold readers interests for long.
5. Real estate blogs that are nothing more than virtual tours of the agents listings.  There is one blog out there that is so full of moving pictures that it crashes my browser.  The site does not include enough new information to keep me coming back.
6. Blogs that use weird fonts and get overly creative with color combinations.  The blogger may think they are branding themselves and that may be true but they are also offering a blog that is hard to read and unpleasant to look at.
7. Bloggs with no information about the author.  On some I can not figure out what city or state the blogger is in or what the blogger does for a living, yet I find these blogs in real estate blog directories.  If I wanted to call or write the blogger I can’t because there is not contact information.
8. Blogs that are filled with personal anecdotes and nothing more.  It is good to do a little personal once in a while but business bloggers should save the daily journal stuff for personal blogs.
9. Bloggers that write about topics that they are not an expert on.  We have techies writing real estate blogs and real estate professionals writing blogs about technology.  When I read them I can tell that the author does not really know what he or she is talking about and I begin to question their credibility and wonder what is motivating them to write about the topic.
10. Bloggers that offer no pictures and pages of dense text.  The average adult reader is only going to read a couple of paragraphs.  A blog post should be more like a blurb and less like a novel.

Not sure why but one of the hard and fast rules of blogging seems to be that lists have to be in 10’s. I would also like to point out that I have made several of the mistakes listed above myself.

as soon as I have time to breathe, I'm gonna go check my baby blog against this list! Thanks Teresa!

Lisa's blog is awesome!  I am going to do a post on it this week!

If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.  Then try some more!  Blogging is a learning experience, and these guidelines help fine tune a budding bloggers efforts.

Good points, i would use bigger words if we had spell check. Most of your comments can be directed at websites as well.

10/28/2006 11:45 AM by Eric Bouler (Prudential Gardner)

Eric,

I can't spell and really hate writing on active rain because of it. Even with a spell checker I make typos that get through.  That all used to bother me so much that I did not write.

You are right about the web sites.  The worst web sites out there belong to real estate professionals. :)

NUmero dos is of particular importance to me.  I completely agree that for keeping a blog real and keeping people engage emotionally, you have to leave the nay sayer and negative comments in a blog! Also want to point out, when using all text- be sure to break it up with bullet points or headings. Good work Teresa, excellent topic!

We should all practice becoming better writers/bloggers- it only betters our business. How do we become better bloggers?

  1. Read good bloggers and learn from them.
  2. Practice. Practice. Practice.
  3. Commit to blogging at least once a week.
  4. Don't let criticism deter you.
Thank you for the great points Teresa!

I feel so much better .... I went through your points and I believe that I have a GREAT blog. Just started and would love for you to take a look and give me your opinion.

I look forward to hearing what you have to say.

This one is soooooooo hard... "Bloggers who delete comments that expresses an opinion that they do not agree with."   I only delete link spam comments.

10/28/2006 03:04 PM by Maureen McCabe - Central Ohio real estate (Real Living HER)

Maureen,

Had no idea that you ever deleted any kind of comment.  Comment and track back spam is blocked from my blog.

Gena,

I'll be stopping by to have a peak!

10/28/2006 03:11 PM by Teresa Boardman (Keller Williams)

Maybe "deleted" is not the word, since the spam comments are never on my blog but I can include it if I wanted to.. but the buttons are delete or approve... so yeah comment spam  links for porn, gambling etc. gets DELETED.

Teresa,

Can you explain what a "blogroll" is and how to work with it? I totally do not understand all the 'linking' stuff and if I have been remiss somehow by not doing that, I apologize to my fellow AR's!

I never blogged before becoming a member of Active Rain, so I'm still very 'green'!

Val,

A blogroll is a place for links to other blogs.  It is a list of links.  go to http://www.stpaulrealestateblog.com on the left side bar about half way down you will find a catergorie that says blogroll.  it has links to other blogs.

10/28/2006 04:24 PM by Teresa Boardman (Keller Williams)

I just went to your website Teresa, - it's magnificent by the way - and I saw the links to the AR blogs.

I still have some questions (I am so computer unsavvy sometimes!).  Would it be alright if I drop you and e-mail; perhaps you can help me set that up?  Because it really is great exposure for your fellow AR's and the topics would be of interest to your 'audience'....

People send me notes with questions all the time and I answer them all, within a few hours at the most.  So email away

I'm new at blogging and continue to be surprised at how much there is to learn, and what you can learn. Thanks for a great post - bet I'm making a bunch of mistakes too!

10/28/2006 06:33 PM by Jeff Dowler ~ Carlsbad Real Estate (RE/MAX Associates)

Teresa, my favorite Realtor®, coiner of the term Blog Food™, and neighbor who owns my favorite dog-person, how could you let wallow in the belief that a Blogroll was a pastry one ate while blogging?

10/28/2006 09:51 PM by Jay Merton & Medford Ambrose, the Codgers (Retired Handymen)

Wow Teresa, thanks for such a concise and useful mini course on blogging. I'm totally new to the concept of blogs and what you've listed really gives some great parameters to go by. Thx again...

Thanks for sharing these thoughts and tips. One way we grow and improve our blogs is by modeling successful bloggers like yourself.

10/29/2006 11:57 PM by John Novak - Las Vegas and Henderson NV Real Estate (Keller Williams Realty The Marketplace)

Aaaah, Teresa, I posted here last night and most of my comments were lost when the hardware crashed.  Sigh.  Anyway, I need to work on my blogroll.  I'm taking little steps expanding each day, but there is so much good stuff to read out there.  The benefits to the blogroll are huge, however.  When you read another person's blog and comment, they are aware you have complimented them with reading and commenting on their blog.  They check you out.  In time they develop a respect for you and add you to their blogroll.  Sellsius is a great example of this.  In addition it helps to form community.  Even though Lisa Dunn and I have not yet met, we will one day and I'm convinced we will respect one another because we "know" each other from our blogs.

Many good points here. I guess we are all learning this new technology together.

Seth Godin has a top-rated blog to which I subscribe. No comments are allowed. Click here for his reasoning. Overall, an excellent post!

12/09/2006 05:56 PM by Craig Mische (Lakehomes.com Realty)

Craig, I have been reading the same blog for a long time.  I get it through my feed readers, Seth is a well known blogger.  He already has a best seller!  My post was aimed at real estate bloggers who wish to get a lot of visits and perhaps meet people that want to buy or sell real estate.  I stand by what I said in my post.  it is a mistake for real estate and bloggers to not allow comments, in doing so they would be missing out on some valuable opportunities.  Seth could do most anything with his blog and it would be successful, the rest of us are not so fortunate.  If I had time to search I could easily find several posts that recommend allowing comments.

12/10/2006 06:57 PM by Teresa Boardman (Keller Williams)

Small is the New BigSmall is the New BigGlad to hear you enjoy Seth too. I also subscribe to his blog and have read all of his books but the most recent, "small is the new big".

One of Seth's reasons is "Instead of writing for everyone, I find myself writing in anticipation of the commenters." I do understand the merit of your point of view and the many others that feel having comments is important. In the end, it is great that each blog is different.

Footnote: As a trial, I have updated my blog to allow commenting.

12/10/2006 08:43 PM by Craig Mische (Lakehomes.com Realty)

Yeah,,, when I become Seth Godin I could turn off my comments... I think Craig was wise to update his blog to allow comments.
