Monday which was day 77 of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill became a little more personal. With the discovery of tar balls in the Eastern edges of lake Pontchartrain it finally seems to be affecting just about every waterway in Southeast Louisiana.
These are waters I have fished and played on since I was a young child. My parents live on the water in Slidell near the tar balls. My dad and I were fishing this area just last month. We were dong well until prevailing strong Easterly winds blew the oil remnantstoward the lake. I am hopeful BP will get the relief well finished shortly and the flow can be cut off. The lake only has a little oil at this time. I think it will be fine if it doesn't get worse. As for the rest of the coast we will have to wait and see.
I took this picture yesterday from the Highway 90 bridge over the Rigolets Pass. (Sorry about the quality but you can see the inclement weather. Also a distant shot.) The point of land is the beginning of lake Pontchartrain and this is where the tar balls were found.
Did you know Louisiana supplies 30% of the nations seafood? Also 30% of the nations oil comes from the Gulf of Mexico. I truly believe this will come out well in time but there are a lot of people hurting right now. I sure hope they get funds to the right people and in time.
In the meantime say some prayers for our fisherman, etc. and keep eating seafood.
