According to a recent Gallup Poll, Americans by a large majority not only support the environmental movement in general, but actually take action in support of their beliefs.

Examples are:  80% recycle

83% have made steps to reduce energy use

75% are trying to use less water

As Gallup describes it, "Thirty years after its founding, most Americans view the environmental movement positively."

That's the good news.

The not so good news is that Americans with just 4.5% of the world's population consume 30% of its materials.

In REALTOR terms, that would mean that the land needed to provide materials supporting the lifestyle of the average American is roughly thirty acres, while the average European can get by on less than 10 acres.

Try putting THAT on the market!

How do we bring about a quicker change?  Well, Realtors will be on the forefront of this movement (whether we like it or not).  So here is my solution:

  *  Let's take the difficulty and guesswork out of green living

  *  Let us adjust expectations and provide realistic goals

  *  Let us stress learning as both a motivator and enabler

  *  Let us become experts on what we sell to the public

Why not become experts indeed?

We have the game covered financially.  We know how to help people buy or sell a house.  We know which banks and lenders to send them to.  We know about the prime rate and its ever changing consequences.

Why not be able to answer people's questions and concerns about the environment we are selling them?

And do you know who would benefit the most here?

The REALTORS!  Talk about an image make-over at the right time.

The more I read and learn about the environment, the more I realize we are still in the opening act of this movement.  We, as Realtors, can sell a better product. We can help home owners make that better product into an even more cost effective one.

We, as Realtors, can turn the tide.

Best of luck and Go Green.

Douglas - Great post! Education is the key to this "green" movement. The more people understand it the easier it will be to embrace. It sounds like you are doing your part!

Dear Stephanie,

Thank you for support.  I seem to have over-greened the active-community with my green issue.  Thank you again.

Dear Mart,

Absolutely, education one way or the other is the only solution.  To me the biggest obstacle are the preconceived notions that people have about the movement and its participants.  Thank you again.

Hi Douglas,

thanks for your great posts.  I was wondering if you could do a blog about xeriscape landscaping techniques (landscaping that doesn't require additional irrigation).   I think it might be a great easy way for home owners to save water, money, and the environment.  any help would be greatly appreciated!

You know, little things make a big difference..... I personally have not run my dryer in months!!! I hang everything up in the spare bathroom!

And I have set the air conditioner higher and rely more on the ceiling fan!!!

It has taken a while for us to all get on board, but with things like reducing the amount of electricity we use and xeriscaping the yards, each of us CAN make a difference!!!

I think most neighborhoods recycle now! Thank heaven for that one!!!

Amanda - It's been a long time.  It's good to hear from you.

Maureen - I have my hands full with Lumpy.  He needs to be fixed (Tuesday is the day) and he is marking everything (including me at one tragic time).

He is a wonderful dog, however.  I have my hands full and it is worth every second.

I see you are keeping up the good work however.  Your blogs are the ones I read first, and I have seen such an amazing increase in confidence in tackling the 'not-so-pleasant' subjects.

Good for you.

Maureen - He just got fixed 7 hours ago.  He is in pain and not happy at all.  He'll recover just fine.  Hey, I measure success on the number of comments (Senor SP agrees!) :)

Sounds good.

Is this a viable market niche?

Angela - Sorry about the lateness in responding.  It is a real niche depending on your motivation.  In other words, if you believe in the message and act accordingly, then the customer (if he or she is concerned with the environment) will respond to you.

Word of caution.  People are getting burned out on going green.  It doesn't have the 'fresh' sound it did two years ago.  Everybody is going green.

So, talk the talk and walk the walk.
