Flesor's Candy Kitchen - Tuscola, IL
If you've been to Tuscola, or at least heard of it, you probably know there is a large outlet mall there. What you probably don't know is what is located downtown. This place may be one of my favorites in Tuscola, but I try not to frequent it due to obvious reasons.
Welcome to the Candy Kitchen
It may not seem like much from the outside, but the inside is what counts. On the corner of Main and Sale Streets located minutes from everywhere is Tuscola. It will be hard to miss in the large downtown of Tuscola!
A Little History About the Candy Kitchen
Built in 1871, the building is part of the original town. In 1901, shortly after his emigration from Greece, Gus Flesor, bought the building and opened his own confectionary, a trade he learned from other Greek immigrants who were migrating downstate from Chicago.
Success in the business allowed him to bring two brothers over to America, support his own growing family and contribute to his new town, Tuscola, with a viable business and leadership in community organizations.
Well into his nineties, Gus Flesor was interviewed as part of the University of Illinois' 1973 documentary of central Illinois artisans. In addition, the entire family was highlighted as the subsequent generations to maintain the now-vanishing craft of homemade candy and ice cream manufacturing.
After Gus retired in the late 1970's the building sat empty for 25 years. One day some third generation family member saw the building for sale. The Flesor girls were both very educated with masters degrees, but they gave it up to restart the family business.
Inside the Candy Kitchen
The Goods
As you can probably tell Flesor's main product is Candy, but that's not all. My Favorite thing there is the Soda Fountain and Food. They have a wide variety of sandwiches and salads, and have a delicious daily special. At their Soda Fountain, they have Homemade Fountain Drinks and Phospahates (The Cherry Phosphate is my Favorite!). They also have a wide variety of Ice cream Shakes, Malts, Sundaes, Sodas, and Floats. Everything there is delicious. You will not leave hungry! There is something for everyone with a sweet tooth.
