Welcome to the Keys - Please Tread Lightly

The traffic has subsided. The neighborhoods are emptying and the fishing is getting good. Summer is upon us in the Florida Keys.

A different mind-set consumes many who call the Keys home. Now that the tourist traffic has slowed it is time for our vacations to begin. Many leave the county for a trip off the "rock". Others prefer to stay and take advantage of the beautiful place we call home. The people who live here are very proud of that fact as they should be. Many care deeply about the environment and doing all they can to keep it pristine.

It is a short respite for many with one of the busiest times in the county coming in late July, lobster mini-season. While the event brings much needed dollars to county businesses, it is hard to watch what how the average visitor cares little about our "home." They carelessly take all they can carry, leaving mess and mayhem in their wake.

When visiting the Keys please tread lightly. We want it to be beautiful for a long time to come. We also depend on the environment to fuel our tourist economy. Even though many are not directly involved with tourism related businesses we all depend on it for our livelihood in one way or another.

Please come down and see us. There is no oil here except suntan oil. Only gin-clear water, great fishing and diving and some of the friendliest people you will meet anywhere. See you at happy hour. First drink is on me!

Sounds fantastic compared the Houston area's sweltering heat and humidity. When I come with the family I promise to pick up after myself.

Hello Jason,

The entire county is a national marine preserve. It is a very special place. People wouldn't treat their own properties like some visitors treat our outdoors. We love people who pick up after themselves! Consider yourself formally invited!!
