Her first baseball game and first time to eat a hot dog!

By
Real Estate Agent with The Berkshire Group

My cousin, Rosie, from Australia, visited the United States last week for the very first time and her major desire was to see her very first baseball game and to eat an original hot dog!  I flew back to Arlington, VA to see my mom and was joined by my sister and niece from South Carolina. We travelled to Baltimore to stay with my younger sister.

Our days were filled with a visit to the downtown farmer's market - incredible produce! The highlight of the trip was the Baltimore Orioles vs. Washington Nationals baseball game. My cousin, Rosie and her friend, Helen, both school teachers in Australia, had never attended an American baseball game. What a treat for us to explain the game of baseball, watch her eat her very first hot dog and then watch her have a chili cheese dog as well!

Camden Yards in Baltimore

We had wonderful tickets which allowed us into the air-conditioned level....good thing because the temperature outside was over 102 degrees.

And then....there was the very first bite of an American hot dog!

Baltimore won the game that day....what a wonderful family excursion!

How neat.  Your sis looks bamboozled taking her first bite of an American hot dog!  What do they eat comparable to a hot dog?  I never thought about places not having a similar product.  When I lived in Germany we had brats, etc and on other overseas tours I always had access to hot dogs at the PX or equivalent.  I have always wanted to visit to Australia ever since reading Alice Springs.  Thanks for sharing.

Emelyn - That's pretty cool but I wouldn't get them too used to hot dogs. Sometimes you don't really know what's in them :-)

They don't have hot dogs in Australia? I didn't know that. Huh... I'm trying to wrap my mind around that. Not that I'm a very big hot dog fan, but I guess it never occurred to me that hot dogs weren't in Australia. Maybe thery're smart enough not to eat the scraps off the floor!

Why do Hot Dogs ALWAYS taste better at the Ballpark?????  I've never been to a ballgame without also enjoying at least two "tube steaks" during my visit.  "Play Ball"!!!!

Tom, everything tastes better at the ballpark....It had been a few years since I attended a game....last one was Colorado Rockies in Denver....what a great day!

Michael - I know what you mean...it was a fun game, because I grew up in Arlington, VA and followed the DC team...now my sister lives in Baltimore...a fun time for all of us!

Good for you for picking one of the best ball parks in America - although you could have stayed in Washington to see the Nationals.  Did you take her to eat mussells at Berthas?

Fun post.  I would think hot dogs would be universal...  not sure why.  They do taste best at a ball park.

How fun is that.  I love taking my son to the Cleveland Indians several times a year and he has just as much fun with the food as he does the game!

Lisa, Lon, Tom, Michael, Maureen, Chris, Rene and Stephanie - Thank you for all of your comments. My sister lives in Baltimore and she arranged the outing. Camden Yards is gorgeous - same architect designed our Coors Field here in Denver.

It was definitely the epitome of Americana....all that was missing was the apple pie. My mother, who will turn 88 in October, thoroughly enjoyed herself, even in the 103 degree weather.
