Don't think you can sweep the facts about the real estate industry under the rug.

Bad news is often a simple fact of like and trying to sweep it away under the proverbial rug isn't going to make the bad news go away.

Life just isn't always as we wish it to be.  Sometimes the facts of life are not pleasant.

After reading my posts about Fannie Mae, Bank of America, negative equity, etc., etc.  I'm getting mail from ActiveRain friends complaining that I'm too negative.  Or, that they believe that I shouldn't write about negative matters.

Some of the writers don't post to ActiveRain members.  They arrogantly presume to have the right to tell me what to write or not to write.  I say arrogantly because they do it in private mail, not in comments to a post.  They junk up my mail with instructions for what I can and can't write, should and shouldn't write.  I think they sometimes believe that their opinions are so important that they need only utter them in mail and the recipient will follow their orders and write what others want to read.  One silly soul even said that I use poor grammar.  HA!  While that is no doubt true, the critic's statement about my grammar is totally immaterial.  All things considered, I'd rather be interesting than grammatically correct, which appears to be the case, OR THEY WOULDN'T BE READING MY "STUFF".   I learned long ago the value of "cosmetic language"and appreciate interesting content from many, many ActiveRain members, gramatically correct or not.

I'd have posted the private e-mail that I got from the critic but for the copyright thing.  DANG!  So, they can hide under the slimy rock where they reside, throwing stones from their protected cover of anonymity.  Who knows what the sunlight would do to them??  We might not want to watch.  I know ActiveRain members well and they don't have a lot of patience with arrogant critics.

SPEAK YOUR PIECE!  ActiveRain members have strong beliefs and sometimes comment to my posts that I'm too negative.  I'm not negative.  I'm the most positive person on the face of this earth.  That said, when facts are unpleasant, they are just that, unpleasant.  If there is something positive going on in the housing industry, you'll hear it from me.  However, when there is something negative going on in the housing industry, you'll hear that from me, too.

I can't do it for you.  I'm only going to write what I believe to be fact, not what you believe to be fact.

Let's agree. .  I won't  tell you what to write and you don't tell me what to write.  Fair?????  Comment all you wish about the content but don't even try to censor me.

Telling me what I should write is a waste of time.  Not even Congress can make that law!!

Richard.  The mail was arrogant in the extreme.

According to the critic, my remarks are poorly written with poor grammatical or syntax error.  That I post too much about the "ills and woes of. . . . .

The funniest criticism was that I want to "tar and feature" Democrats.

She goes on that by blaming "Frank, et. al., is an insult to our profession".

She actually defends the NAR, but believes that my criticisms get us nowhere.  THAT isn't true.  It makes me feel good when I read the economic news and want to SCREAM OUT LOUD!!

THE MOST PATHETIC ASPECT of her mail is that she hasn't he guts or conviction of her views to post it.  She should.

Oh well.  It takes all kinds. . . .

Life and Real Estate is not always filled with good things but to those who are honest and endure rewards await. When I got my license years ago I decided honesty would be my policy and overall my clients appreciate it. As for other agents, Oh Well, they may be of the mindset that they tell a client what they want to hear even to the point of overpricing their house. Failure.

Keep on posting Lenn as you tell it like it is and if the truth hurts then more folks need to get a helmet as life is tough.

Those who disrespect other rights to their opinons.  Can't have much repect for themselves.

We don't have to agree.  But not having respect for others rights well....... no wonder our country is in such bad shape.

Bryant.  HA!  Indeed.  That lady is not just in a box, that box is buried somewhere.

Mark.  If all we do is parrot each other and pass on good news, the public would think we lived in a cave.

Cameron.  Thanks.  I think we get a good balance on ActiveRain.  In fact, I believe I write a balanced blog.  My focus, however, is protecting the consumer, always.  That doesn't always portray some entities in a good light.

H Lenn, You are right. We should always say it the way we see it. We each know our own part of the industry and we mostly now where or what the pimples are ( or at least should). So trying to make a silk purse from a sows ear poses two problems for me. I could never catch the darn thing and secondly, who would want to cut off the ear anyway. :-)

You're blogs are perfectly fine! I certainly enjoy them. They're very balanced, full of information, facts and opinions. You're definitely not a "purveyor of negativity or a Pollyanna".

I recently received an anonymous email about my grammar. I was accused of using "it's" wrong and told to fix my tacky grammatical mistake on my real estate blog. I re-read over 300 blogs and the only time I used "it's", it was used properly. Some people need to get a life.

Hi Lenn,

Your 'negative' post is positively refreshing. I don't think that everybody in AR has to be a 'Cassandra' (The trojan lady who kept telling everyone that the Greeks were coming,) but it seems that sometimes when people travel down this road things get pretty quiet around here. I think that we all could use a bit more 'activism' in the rain.

(Did I forget to mention that the NAR is completely ineffective and selling us all down the river?)

William.  Funny, but so true.

Mitchell.  Next time don't waste your time letting folks introduce doubt in your mind.  When it comes to spelling and grammer ON A BLOG, I just simply do not care.

Andrew.  "Selling us down the river", huh?  Were you there when the NAR gave our MLS content to the crooks at  I was and remember it well.

The news is the news. Trying to sugar coat it just makes us lose credibility. Tell it like it is Lenn! If it riles some folks up, good. Maybe they'll do something about it rather than send you demeaning emails.

Lenn....(me your ear) for a moment please...

Isn't right or wrong, negative or positive, good or bad...... SUBJECTIVE.....? That being said, welcome to the world of politics and personal growth. When you deal at large with the public, you are always going to get feedback and input. Once more, people are in different places at different times with their own personal growth and observations. What they are seeing and feeling is real to them. At the same time, they are having the same experience about you that you are having about them. Navigating through it all is what makes and defines your character and beliefs. That is why connecting with someone is so satisfying and promotes and compliments the journey of life. I am for anyone having something to say....what I do with it is my business.....

Best & Thank you for letting me share.....

Hi Lenn

I was at seminars giving them way too much money because I trusted my National Association to support the profession and help transition us into the internet age of marketing... how stupid was I? I should have been reading your 'negative' blogs instead of their email solicitations. Keep it up.

Andrew.  Not all of my posts are negative.  In fact, I've been on the Internet since 1995 and ALL, THAT IS ALL of my business and that of a number of agents has been from my Internet presence since July 1995.

That said, it was all don't WITHOUT the help of

When the rain falls, does one's skin not get wet regardless of whether he/she admits it?

The idea of steering consumer confidence by way of propaganda marketing runs contrary to every tenet of blogging that I hold dear.  There is honor in the truthful offering of perspective.  I, for one, do not sit down to impart a "positive" or a "negative" message when I write.  I simply write.  The tone reflects genuine opinion that pertains to the topic at hand.  As we are all fallible, we won't get it right every time, but the nobility lies in the intent.  I would rather be proven factually wrong on occasion than disingenuous.

If we are not digging for core truth in our blogging, connotations be damned, what are doing here?  Easier to cram pure marketing pieces down the public's throat via postcard.

Paul.  Dang.  I wish comments could be featured.  Thanks for that thoughtful comment.

The very thought of blogging to steer opinion is repugnant to me.

I do post positive messages regularly.  I post about new home opportunities in my market area.  I post about financing opportunities in my market area.

I also post about government, bank, etc. policies that affect home buyers and agents in my market area.

That's my job.  To investigate, to learn, to spread the word.  Our agents are far more effective and able to help serious home buyers looking for a HOME if we can be truthful and helpful about the market.  They're going to buy.  We just want them to buy smart.  As published before WE HAD ONLY ONE BUYER defeult following the housing collapse.  That was because he didn't listen to our advice and picked up a second home, because he could.  When he couldn't refinance it, he lost everything.

Those are simple facts.

Lenn - sorry I didn't see this until now!  Sorry I missed it.  This is well said!  I don't like the rock dwellers either.  Show yourself for who you really are!  And as to telling people what to say or not to say, geez, go eat some cake.  Marie A. had a part removed for saying something like that, if she really said it...

Lenn, I'm still trying to wrap my head around what kind of dingleberry actually thinks that you will read their cowardly private email and then just fall lockstep in line to comply with their ideas.

Sounds to me like they haven't been paying attention.

Sometimes, the news is just bad.  I think people appreciate honesty and you have more credibility when you tell it like it is.  The self-appointed grammar, spelling, and thought police are missing the point and greater value of a social network.

When there is a turd on the living room floor, you can point out the lovely carpets, extol the virtues of the lovely windows, but ultimately, there is still a turd on the living room floor.
