Vinyl siding is prone to damage. That includes damage from lawn mowers, weed wackers, baseballs. As it gets older, more UV exposure, it gets more brittle too. It is kind of amusing when you know the answer but over and over buyers or realtors will ask why the siding has this wavy pattern and is obviously not in the original shape. The area is almost always at a deck or patio area. The answer is that someone had a barbecue there and the vinyl was melted. It is plastic so it melts at a fairly low temperature. The local lumber yard in this area, that stocks lots of vinyl siding, told me that they sell most of it this time of year -- people replacing it after melting it. The photo below gives you a subtle example of what it looks like when a barbecue was too close, although sometimes it is way more prominent than this. If you see this kind of thing, it is pretty safe to figure a barbecue was too close to the house. You really don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce that one.
