IRONMAN COMES TO THE WOODLANDS!  It is official!  The Ironman Triathlon is making it's debut right here in The Woodlands!  Next May 21, 2011 will host over 2,500 athletes to take on the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and finishing with a 26.2 mile run.

Memorial Hermann Hospital will be the key sponsor of the event naming it the Memorial Hermann Ironman Texas.  The World Triathlon Corporationholds 25 Ironman events all over the world including the famous Kona, Hawaii event.

The Woodlands is a great place to host an event of this magnitude.  The fitness community here is vast with numerous running clubs, biking clubs, and many athletic clubs.  Our beautiful wooded neighborhoods will make for a scenic and beautiful race course.

Starting in Lake Woodlands with the swim and finishing with the run in Towne Green.  The bike ride is expected to head out west from The Woodlands into the rolling terrain of west Montgomery County.

The economic benefits to our community are impressive as well.  It has been reported that this event could bring $16 million dollars to The Woodlands and surrounding area.  Hotels, restaurants, retail, etc. will all benefit from the event.

Registration for the event is now open!

I am excited about this event and will be looking for a way to be involved as a volunteer!  What an exciting event right here in our backyard!

Hello Paula and I remember "Ironman" bike rides many years ago and I can't believe they are still called "Ironman"

What about the name "Ironpeople?"

As a triathlete it is my goal to be doing Ironman tri's in a year or so.  I've done a couple of Olympic distance tri's and several sprints, but no Ironmen yet.  Thanks for the post and best of luck to you.

Paula, I'm not familiar with Ironman but it does sound like it will be a boost.  The Woodlands is very sports conscious.  I always see people out walking, running and riding bikes on the trails.

I sometimes find it hard to get in 30 minutes of tred work each day. Can you imagine the shape these athletes must be in? Hat off to them all.

Hi Paula,  Hope you're getting stronger every day!  Well, the Barr family is all hyped and excited about Woodlands Ironman 2011.  Kevin (son) just finished Ironman Lake Placid and Amy (daughter-in-law) is getting ready for Ironman Kona in October.  Looking forward to enjoying the Woodlands event with you and the community.  LOL...we won't need all the glow in the dark "stuff" to greet the finishers, but I'm collecting all my noise makers!
