A Pet's Ten Commandments

1

 1.    My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

12.    Give me time to understand what you want of me Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being..

3.    Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment.

4.    You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5.    Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6.    Be aware that however you treat me,. I will never forget it.

17.    Please never hit me, Please never strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

18.    Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me.  Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart may be getting old or weak.

9.    Please take care of me when I grow old.  You too, will grow old.

10.  On the ultimate difficult Journey, go with me please.  Never say you can't bear to watch.  Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

1 Take a moment to Thank God for your pets.  Enjoy and take good care of them.  Life would be much duller, less joyful experience without God's Critters.

Kathy what a Great Blog.  I'm hear at the lake this weekend with my wife and our wonderful family members Kris Kringle and St Nick.  They are 14 and 12 year old long hair dachshunds.  They bring such joy and you are so right they just want you to love them.  Thanks for this wonderful post one of the best I've ever read@!

Kathy,

Very good points for the non pet owner (who may want to become one) and the pet owner to follow daily.

This is a wonderful post. And when one sees strays along the road one has to wonder what are these folks thinking of. Your ten commandments are great. Maybe they should be posted outside every shelter and every aspca door

Great post and so very true. We have had a Silky, a Yorkie, and now a new Yorkie. The first two lived full lives and they were family. Each replacement was unique and we never forget the ones we had before.

More opinions than you want to hear about.

Kathy, thank you for the nice post.  Once, at a Thunder Bay dog show, an old geezer walked up to me and we talked about dogs.  He said "I just can't understand how people can live without a dog."  I share his lack of understanding.

I've owned either a dog or a cat since I was 5.   I remember each of them well and they all hold a special place in my memory and heart.  You list is perfect reminder how important they are.

I loved this post, but I would change #7 to "never hit or strike me" - I don't think pets ever need to be hit.  My dog, Java, will be 13 on the 18th!

What a wonderful reminder of the unconditional love that comes from bonding with pets.  My sheepdog lived to be 14!  Life expectancy was 9....she is gone but not forgotten.   I still tear up, some 15 years later, remembering the joy we shared together.
