Normally Maine is a weekend destination for our mini-vacations but most of the time we avoid the tourist attractions and relax on our lake.  For a change of pace we decided to spend the day at Boothbay

In addition to poking around in little shops or having lunch there are a number of water activities.

Kayak rentals are available, various fishing charters are based out of the harbor and there are plenty of scenic cruises.  Since the day was a little on the cool side for mid August we choose to spend a few hours on Cap's Combo.

Boothbay Harbor is both a tourist destination and a working port so we saw plenty of Lobster Boats mixed in among the pleasure vessels.  Lobster enthusiasts can even go out on a Trap Hauling trip that lasts just over an hour.  Other short cruises include Whale Watching or Seal Sighting adventures.  You can easily fill a day, a weekend or even a week hanging around the harbor.

Nearby Reid State Park has sandy beaches for those that just cannot resist the temptation of swimming in the cool waters of Maine's Mid-Coast.  It has been a number of years since I've taken a plunge but I recall the thoughts of Bone Chilling Cold crossing my mind as I exited the Atlantic waters of Maine.  There is also a protected lagoon area where the water gets quite warm.

Here are the Lighthouses we saw on this trip - Ram Island Light,  the Peraquid Point Light or the Burnt Island Light.

this is too timely for me.... my best friend and I made the decision today to take her motor-home and drive to Maine for a lobster dinner.... then we calculated the expense of fuel and thought maybe we should fly... some time soon.... I really want to visit Maine.

Dan,

I have never been here, those photo's are beautiful, the lighthouses. I would love to go on the whale watch, did you see any puffins? They are sooo cute!!! :)

Ray...It was a nice area although Sandra had to buy sweats in the middle of August because she was cold.

Thesa...That really adds to the cost of a lobster dinner... You can probably have a few delivered but when you get to this coast let me know and maybe we can do lunch...

Suzanne...Usually we never do these activities because the kids preferred tubing & water skiing at the lake but this year we are venturing out.  Didn't do the Whale Watch because it left later and was a longer cruise. Since it was cool 2-1/2 hours on the water in my shorts and tank top was enough.  Sandra had to buy warmth and had her hood up within an hour.  We will do the Whale Watch soon since they 10:30-2:00 trip we can hit that on the way home some weekend.

Dan--The photos are beautiful. I love the lighthouses. We only have one in Minnesota. The Splitrock Lighthouse on the north shore of  Lake Superior.  And if it was cold, I would have worn sweats too!:)

Dan, sounds like you and Sandra had a great time.  It has been a number of years since I have been up in Maine, but always enjoyed the times that me and my wife went there.

Love the pics-- it looks like a beautiful spot.  I'm with you, Sandra.  There is nothing worse than being cold!  I hate it when I'm all prepared for a nice day in the sun, only to freeze my tail off.

How was lunch?

Mike... Suppose a little water does look good in the land of sunshine and tumbleweeds..

Teri... The rocky coastline of New England has many lights.

George...I always create a good time and Sandra reluctantly comes for the ride...

Sandi... I agree it detracts from the fun if your cold...but.... being the practical type I'm all for packing what you need instead of buying the same warm up stuff on nearly every outing.  Lunch.... Well... I'm a bit of a critic so I'd say it was OK.  Since we were in Boothbay I went with a Lobster Roll and Sandra had Clam Chowder.  In Maine everything it Lobster but I rarely have it. They even feature lobster something at McDonalds.

It's more fun, Dan, to collect warm stuff everywhere you go!

Lunch sounds great...  I'm still stumbling over the lobster at McDonalds!  Are you KIDDING me?  I've never heard of such a thing.

Sandi.. I shouldn't complain about Maine Sweats.. They are cheap compared to the Ritz Wear she picked up in Laguna Niguel.   We're heading to Maine again this weekend and I'll snap some photos of all the Lobster signs... Including McDonald's....  Will make for a cute little blog.
