Waterfront House Plans

Thinking of building that lake-house? There are things to think about for that lake-house house-plan!

Start with the question, "Why did you want to build on the lake to start with?"

There are probably several reasons for wanting a waterfront residence but somewhere in the list is THE VIEW.

When shopping for blueprints or talking to the architect, look for plans that allow the maximum exposure to the view from as many rooms as possible.

Open floor plans for the main area lend themselves well to area view sharing since the area is one big space.  This allows the lake or water to be seen whether in the living area, dining area or kitchen, especially if the exposed wall toward the lake is mostly windows.

One home that I have listed has windows between the main living areas and an area of office space which is closest to the lake.  While sitting in the living room you can look through the windows across the office area and through windows in it's exterior wall to see a spectacular sunrise over the lake.

There are many ways to address the concern of being able to enjoy the view from all major areas of the home.  There will be a floor plan to suit you and your lake lot exactly!

Wise advice!  I live in a lake front home that was built in the 1970s.  Most of the view from most of the house was blocked by walls when I bought it, but we opened it all up (on the ground floor) when we bought it 3 years ago.  We still have to remodel the upstairs - the master bedroom is on the view side of the house, but half the master, on the view side, is a walk-in closet!  How dumb is that?  I'm not looking forward to the construction that it will take to fix, but eventually it will be fixed to my satisfaction.  I wonder what the architect was thinking (or smoking?) when he designed it?!

I love my lake cottage, we only use it in the summer but I hope to retire on a lake because it is so peaceful, I love the water. It rejuvinates me.

I've enjoyed both your lake front blogs.  Great advise. Thank You

Vicki - We have several lake houses around that were small cabins when originally built - a little was added here and a little there until sometimes the floor plan is next to impossible.  As waterfront properties' prices have risen so sharply in the last few years, the price paid is prohibitive to tearing it down and starting over - so we end up with a very unique floor plan at times.  Thanks for commenting.

Ann - I know exactly what you mean.  We live on a farm and it is a wonderful place to live, but then we have the lake property too and it rests me.

Paul - Thanks for stopping by. We really enjoy working the lake.  It is our specialty.
