26 Comments on Home Safety: A Long Way To Fall
Jay,
At 200 and too many pounds, these things scare the heck out of me. Particularly when the builder or owner installs the lightest and cheapest around.
I really hate the ones over the stairs, those that pull down the other direction from your photo. So if they collapse, you are guaranteed a 15 foot drop.
Mike - why would anyone take the risk of not only falling but tumbling down stairs afterwards!
Jay,
This is why as a real estate agent, I never go into the attic. If the client's want to climb up the ladder, it's at their own peril. One time, there was an attic with no ladder and my client asked me to give him the 10 finger boost so he could get up there!
Brian - as you know, I tease young ladies telling them that that's how I will get them up in there! What did you say, um, no?
Jay - Most are unaware of the dangers posed by improperly installed attic stairs. A local building inspector was permanently disabled because of an improperly secured set of stairs. I always check that stairs are secure before climbing on them.
Often times, John, I don't use the stairs installed. I get my own ladder. Bummer about that local inspector. I hope he has been taken care of.
Great new photo!
Jay, just the process of opening that set of stairs could result in someone backing off the top of the house stairs and falling to the bottom. Like you I hate these stairs as well.
OMG! And it looks like it will fold up when you try to stand on it! Wow.
And tell your kids NOT to climb them at the neighbors too. (a little experience with this sort of thing)
Charlie - everything about this one was scary!
Chris - it was very wobbly and weak. I wouldn't touch it!
Nana - I'll remember that! My sons probably would have walked up them on their hands - my daughters would not have gone up!
Jay, good lord! I've never seen one of these open to the top of a flight of stairs! And I don't like them either. I give my bum knee as an excuse for staying off of them.
Pat - I was askeered of that ladder! You probably should stay off of them too, but ESPECIALLY when it opens up into a stairway!
At least one of my daughters would have been up that ladder on a daily basis. She is the one I was referring to and ended up in a trauma center once. Now she has a daughter cut from the same cloth. Nana
Serves her righ Nana. Croakster is the only one I know who could do well in that fall...
Jay,
Those things are usually so totally unsafe. Often they are about to come loose at the top.
Mr Jay,
Croakster would join me, I am sure, in suggesting that you just delete Mrs Kate upon her entry to your posts. She has zero respect for superior animals and amphibians.
Nutsy
What an accident waiting to happen. That information right their was worth the price of the home inspection.
Steve - you can see it leaning at the top. It was unstable to boot.
Nutsy - I think Croakster tries to be polite with everyone, but I will check and see what he wants to do.
Troy - I think so too! And these buyers are in South Carolina, their mother present at the inspection. I don't think Mom got it as well as you do.
This looks like it should be a ride at a water park. Good luck on getting the Xmas decorations out this year, Honey.
Glenn - that would be quite the ride, like something you would see on a Three Stooges movie or something like that!
