Realtors Meeting With BP

Thank you for posting this.  The real estate industry is often "forgotten" in the wake of disasters and I am glad Florida Realtors are being pro-active.

Aren't we ever going to see and end to this situation.

A meeting was held in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. yesterday with Realtors expressing they're frustration over the effect of the oil spill on business.  From what I read on floridarealtors.org, even though BP stated they would pay for lost contracts due to the spill, none have been paid.  John Harrell, president of Bay County Associationof Realtors, said "he knows 50 people who have filed claims, and none of them have been paid".  BP's statement of the claims process was "it is a complicated process and there is no cookie-cutter answer".  I guess this means Realtors will not see a dime of reimbursement.

Several sales have been lost in our area offices alone.  Agents working with out of state customer are finding their customers having concerns about purchasing a home at this time, with the oil along the coast they are deciding to wait.  I can't imagine how many agents this is happening to, or, is going to happen to.  With the oil running freely for the next several days who knows the total impact this is going to have on our industry.  Even though we don't have any oil balls here, the customer's perception is we may in the future, and then what happens to their investment?

When you come down to it there isn't very much we can do about this situation. BP will find a way not to fulfill their obligations (like not paying the fisherman), and the Administration has clammed up; no help in that arena.

All we can do is keep trying.
I loved the part where Florida Realtors President Wendell Davis said to the BP representative "Plug the hole is what we want and need"

Morning Wallace,  Our area, Fort Myers Beach in Southwest Florida has less than 1% chance of being hit by the spill but we have had many potential buyers express concern over the spill and there have been some instances of cancelled contracts with the oil problem given as the reason.

Hi Wallace - I cannot imagine having to work in the environment of potential problems.   Even the stock market is averse to any questionable situations.  Buyers cannot be any different.

Wallace-good reblog.  As someone who is not near an ocean I did not even think about this as being a problem for us as Realtors.   Just goes to show how widespread and horrific this problem continues to be.  Those poor animals, fish and people are going to be affected for years to come.
