Many people trying to access ActiveRain today were greeted with an message saying the site was down and that we had experienced a hardware failure.  We're back up now, but here is what happened...

Early this morning I was woken up by our hosting provider down in Texas.  I was informed that multiple hard drives on our database server had failed. We have a redundant array of hard drives (RAID) on the server so if one goes down another one should take its place without an interruption in service.  For some unknown reason multiple drives failed in a very short period of time, taking the whole system off-line.  We spent the whole day working with our hosting provider to replace the drives and rebuild the server from data backups, which luckily had been created less than an hour before the disk failures.

There may be a small amount of data loss during in the time in between the last data backup (12:00 am CST) and the disk failures (~1:30 am CST).  Hopefully most of you were sleeping during this time.

The whole incident was extremely unfortunate and we are working with our hosting provider to put in place procedures to bring the system back online faster in the unlikely event this should ever happen again.  We apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused our members or other visitors to the site.

I too must add to the positive comments regarding the professional manner in which your host handled this problem.  Posting that there was a Hardware problem for all to see was great.  It is the unknow that can frequently lead to difficulties.  So thanks for the GREAT communications.

Hmmm..

I actually bumped into the downtime.  I was a bit upset.  I figured A/R would be back up and running.

Good Monday Morning AR!

Most of the type of technology you described as having failed is way over my head. I am just a 58 year old Baby Boomer trying to understand all that can go wrong or right in the world of computers.

I do enjoy Active Rain.

My hosting provider has had two catastrophic server failures in the last five months . . . after five years of virtually 100% uptime.  I know how maddeningly frustrating this can be.  Good to have you back!

Soooooooooo nice to see AR back online, like the rest you you guys I have to admit I missed being able to log in yesterday.

I remember when this happened to my site a few months ago, my stomach was in a knot, it felt like I had eaten bad shrimp after my site was down for more than 5 hours. C'est la vie, isn't technology wonderful.

Don't sweat it. It was game day/race day and beautiful here in the North Georgia Mountians. But boy if it had been a rainy, cold Tuesday morning I'll tell you what!

Keep up the great work. You've developed what has become my favorite spot on the web.

You need to read. You need to play outside of the rain. You need a little sunshine. You need to pet the dogs. You need to feed us. You really needed the bath. You need to quit sending your lovely wife emails! LOL SEE :>

Murphys Law I guess. The whole purpose of a raid array is to have backup drives in case one fails......but multiple drive failure?  What did you guys do!!!!???? -Charles
