Wylie to Dedicate First Public Art Project July 19
"100 Years: A Visual History" a Mosaic by Montage 48/61
Wylie, TX, Monday, June 21, 2010 - Join Mayor Hogue, the City Council, the Public Arts Advisory Board, and Wylie Fire-Rescue for the dedication of Wylie's first public art project, a mosaic by artists Montage 48/61 titled "100 Years: A Visual History". The celebration is scheduled for Monday, July 19, 6:30 pm, at Fire Station #3 on the corner of East Brown Street and W.A. Allen Boulevard.
"The artwork will be dedicated to the past and present members of Wylie Fire-Rescue in recognition of their selfless service," says Wylie Fire Chief Randy Corbin. "The Fire Department is honored to be the site of Wylie's first public art project as we celebrate 100 years of fire service."
The 14-foot long wall features seven mosaic panels depicting WFR's rich history and service over the last 100 years. Artists Larry Enge and Charlotte Lindsey, known as Montage 48/61, worked from photographs, placing thousands of tile pieces together to create both black and white, and color images. Several of the panels were inspired by photographs taken by Councilman Rick White and his wife Alicia.
Wylie's Public Art program dedicates one percent of capital improvement project costs to fund commissioned art projects. Artists are selected through a process beginning with an open call to artists by the Public Art Advisory Board. A selection committee comprised of art board members, citizens, and City staff narrows the list of artists. Finally, based on recommendations by the Public Art Advisory Board, the City Council commissions an artist.
"100 Years: A Visual History" is the first of many commissioned works of art to be completed in Wylie over the next year. Four other original pieces of art are under development, including projects at the New Municipal Complex, Founders Park and Community Park.
