Louisville's Rising Star: NuLu There is a rising star in Louisville and it just seems to be getting brighter. Louisville's East Market District has undergone some radical changes in the last few years. Spearheaded by Gill Holland, the transformation has been incredible and the area now goes by a new name: NuLu. NuLu has become the arts district for Louisville, boasting some unique and fresh views of the city.

At the heart of NuLu is the Green Building. This renovated former dry goods store anticipates being the first commercial building to receive the LEED Platinum certification as a sustainable building after two years of occupancy. This 110 year old building has been reborn. It now boasts a 40 foot high lobby, a living wall, and uses renewable energy sources. It is also home to the hottest new place to break bread; the 732 Social restaurant.

732 Social is a street facing café with the mantra of: Fresh, Local, Social. The menus are based on farm to table cuisine and even some of the wines are organic! But locals say that you haven't lived until you have tried their cocktails. Some of the recipes go back pre-prohibition like the 1920's cocktail; the Hanky Panky. Or if you are feeling the need to step even further back in time, try the 1859 version of the Champagne Cocktail!  The atmosphere is very friendly. It isn't uncommon for conversation to jump to the next table. The reclaimed barn wood decorating the walls helps to set a rustic urban atmosphere. The restaurant is just one more way NuLu is coming to life.

Right in step with the SoHo feel of the area is The Green Building Gallery. Currently on exhibit are the works of Gibbs Rounsavall, a local contemporary artist. Joining all this soon is Creation Garden's. They are the regions number one produce wholesaler and gourmet food distributor. Of course they are so much more than that! Creation Garden has started a program called Eco-Steward. The goal is to help restaurants go green and let eco-conscience patrons know which restaurants are participating in the program! You can see why they are a perfect fit for NuLu!
