Although the first practice date was June 30, parents are encouraged to bring your player to the field ANY Wednesday to join the kids for a play. No pre-registration is required - you may register right there at the field.
It has been an exciting month for soccer fans of all ages with the month long World Cup being played in South Africa. The tournament is only played once every four years and garners international media coverage. Fans of this tremendous sport, filled with talented athletes and flamboyant personalities span the globe. However in the far East County, we find a different level of soccer enthusiast, as players from the areas TOPSoccer league recently took to the pitch.
Some of the best advantages to living in the East Contra Costa County area are the programs available for kids and families. As we move into the summer months the local pools are filled with joy and laughter from the many children that are out of school and enjoying the great California sunshine we have this time of year. In addition to the various parks, open space and hiking trails located in the Brentwood, Oakley and Discovery Bay area, there is also an abundance of programs available for area kids to take advantage of. From Youth football to Cheer Teams, Swim lessons to water polo, East Contra Costa County has it all.
This past week practice was kicked off for the 2010 TOPSoccer season as well. US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) is a program that helps to enable all children to play soccer. TOPSoccer is a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities. The program is run by volunteers, called Buddies, and is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, ages 4-19, that has a mental or physical disability. 
Practices are held on Wednesdays at Balfour-Guthrie Park on Balfour Ave., across the street from Heritage High School. Practice is from 4:30 to 5:30 for all teams. Walk-in registration is officially over, but it's not too late to sign up for the upcoming season. The BEST way to sign up is to show up at a practice and fill out the paperwork there on the spot. If that is not possible, you can contact TOPSoccer Mom CiCi at mamamia921@hotmail.com. Send your name and a mailing address (snail mail, not email) and you'll have one in your mailbox within a few days.
Opening Day will be held on Saturday, July 31 at the Freedom High School Basin in Oakley. Information on photo packets will 
be going home with players (handed out at practice on Wed.) soon, and more information on the schedule for this day will be given as it becomes available.
Beginning in August, all games will be played on Saturday mornings at Oak Meadow Park in Brentwood. Schedules will be posted when they are available.
