You have to be comfortable with being UN-comfortable to thrive in Today's Business Environment

I attended the Portland Raincamp and one of the attendees made a comment that stuck in my mind . . . she said; "I DON'T feel comfortable about committing to Active Rain, or any other IT platform for that matter, to generate my business for me. What if you get bought out by Google or Microsoft and they up the price or change the Terms & Conditions?"

I thought it was an excellent statement/question that echoes the sentiments of many people from my age demographic (I'm in my 40's).

Folks I completed my Master's Thesis on the Information Age back in 1993 and what I discovered is that the one certainty we have about the future is that EVERYTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE!

I know it's uncomfortable but in order to succeed moving forward, we simply cannot rest on our past successes. We have to CONSTANTLY  - LEARN - UNLEARN - and RELEARN. To do anything else is professional suicide.

I would answer the lady's question by saying;

1.   Use the tools and resources that are available to you NOW.

2.   Always be on the lookout for a better way

3.   Don't be afraid to change course mid-stream

Harj,

Great post, and thanks for writing it! I responded to this post with a post of my own. Please let me know what you think:

There's so much correctness in living in the NOW. This is a very good example.

I was there and also heard the comment. We need to seize the best tools available and make good use of them. And we need to do that now.

We evolve by adapting. Changing may not be comfortable, but we need to operate outside our comfort zone if we wish to succeed and grow.

Harj - you gave the lady three great recommendations. To me "Future is about Change", we must adapt.

Harj,

isnp;t it interesting to watch how the founder of Active Rain is breaking AR guidlines by putting an outgoing link to his own blog in the comment to a member.

Wow

If I thought Google was going to be gone tomorrow would I submit stuff to it? Of course I would, it is still here today and it is still bringing me business. Work with what you have, virtual tours maybe gone tomorrow, does that mean you don't do them? No of course not! Great post with many, many great points!

Everything changes all the time, we work in the market we are in, we use the technology we have at our finger tips. Jons post sent me here.

Ditto what the others said.  Even if you're on the right track, you'll still get run over if you're standing still.

You have the right outlook. Go with the flow and you know what, we make things a success when we learn along the way and apply the new things. C'mon its the modern world now, don't be ancient. We already are, and we wouldn't want to be left behind if we want to make it big.

Look at how much has changed around here since you wrote this.  I look at this as a community site - first and foremost.  I think too many are all engulfed in the point system and that will be each individual's downfall when change happens!

The most successful people are those who put themselves in uncomfortable situations and then seek solutions to make everyone more comfortable.
