Oil On The Beach In Saint Augustine

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential Network Realty

I get a lot of calls from my friends and family up north and I am amazed that they are asking me about the oil on the beach here in St Augustine. I guess most of them don't realize how far removed from that situation that we are. We are the northeast coast of Florida.

I feel really bad for the people that are having to deal with that. I can't imagine what they are going through. After all, one of the main reasons, if not THE main reason we moved to Florida is the beach!!!

Here are some recent pictures of the St Augustine beach: No oil on this beach!! No oil on this beach!! The only oil on this beach is on my skin!!

So for the northerners, let me explain why oil on the St. Augustine Beach is so unlikely (at least the way it's been explained to me). There is a thing called the Gulf Stream(I didn't learn about this until I moved down here)...this Gulf Stream runs pretty much along the eastern coast of Florida until it's gets to right around Daytona Beach. From there it jets out to sea about 50 miles and stays there until it gets somewhere up in Georgia. Then it comes back in. The jet stream is what would carry that oil around the coast of Florida if it got caught in it. So far that has not happened and even if it did, when it hits south of Daytona it would be carried out to sea and around Daytona, St Augustine and pretty much all of northeast Florida. The only caveat is if a hurricane somehow blew it in, which is also unlikely because it is the Gulf Stream that also keeps hurricanes away from St Augustine and Northeast Florida (no hurricanes have hit St Aug in 44 years). So If you are having some reservations about vacationing or might I add moving to St. Augustine, these are the facts as I know them. So come on down!!! And call me or email me if you need some more info on St Augustine...Florida's BEST KEPT SECRET!!                       SaintJohnsCountyHomesForSale.com

Hi William,  Our area is even further removed from the BP spill than you and we get the same questions.  Our rental dept has some cancellations based on a lack of understanding about how far removed we are.
