Active Rain is Just One Tool in My Internet Marketing Arsenal

By
Real Estate Agent with HomeSmart

I usually write such lengthy comments to other posts that I decided to create a post out of those long comments House of wordsinstead.  This is in response to Jonathan Washburn's post "Forever is composed of nows".  Jonathan's post was a response to another post written by Harj Gill (the link is in his post), about providing our content to AR, or any other proprietary blogging/website provider.

I blog on AR to add to my blogging experience (I have multiple blogs). Each of my blogs has a purpose, and AR started out for me as "conversing to other agents" and most of my current blogs are to Localism.

The most important aspect of AR for me is the comaraderie and learning experience. My AR blogs get indexed but don't rank well (and that's OK with me since I want my main website to rank and my AR blogs always send one-way links to my website).  They don't rank well because I don't promote them anywhere else.  I specifically use them to promote my other sites.  So they're doing what I want them to do.

Do I own my website? No, because I purchased it through a webmaster. I own the content on that site, and need to remind myself to keep copies of all of it in case something happens to my website vendor.

On the other hand, I own a Wordpress blog (have a couple), that I host on Bluehost. I can take those sites to any other hosting provider and do what I want with them. I can switch up templates in less than a minute (as long as they're already uploaded), I can change them up spending a little more coding time, I can add plug-ins and do whatever I want. So to answer Jim Hale (#3 commenter on Jonathan's post), yes, you can own your own blog/site.

I don't believe in putting all of my eggs in one basket so that's why I share my blogging. Years ago one of my main websites was penalized by Google (along with many others at the time) for reciprocal linking. It came back but was off Google serps for around 3 months (and it was in the #1 spot for my keywords).

It's not easy using multiple blogging platforms but fortunately, blogging happens to be a hobby of mine (writing) that pays off for my business. I know it's difficult for some just to make posts on AR. I think AR is a great compliment to an agent's online presence, but it wouldn't be the only thing I rely on.

I will also say that I found an agent for my own purchase of a 2nd home in Scottsdale, AZ on AR and I currently have a listing from an AR member, so it has worked as a referral source. AR is a combination of things for me, and it is just one tool in my entire Internet marketing arsenal.

What exactl was Google upset about?

Marc, there was a big brouhaha over reciprocal linking a few years back, especially recip linking on the same server.  Supposedly, the main offense was all of the recip linking sites were creating similar state link pages on their websites that Google hated.  I'm not 100% sure if it was reciprocal linking on same servers or the state pages Google had to index or a combination of the two.

What ended up happening (besides some sites getting a temporary slap down - my site was #1 for main keywords and was remanded to page 1000 or something for 3 months until being allowed back into the #1 spot), was that Google stopped indexing the recip link pages so there was no longer Google juice for having your link on those pages.  So most sites stopped doing it.  Oh, then there was contextual linking and I think that's what we were tattled on for doing.  It was all a method of SEO that was popular at the time, and that was basically trying to manipulate Google's search results, which Google doesn't like.

There were outspoken website providers who were promoting it.  One provider, Advanced Access (AA), had most of their website customers slapped by Google and then my provider, Real Estate Webmasters (REW), was next.

We truly feel a competitor "turned us in" so to speak, and it only affected one of two websites I had with this vendor (it was a local niche site - not my main site, thank goodness).  But most of the sites of both AA & REW were people's main websites and those site owners felt the pain.

It happened long ago and is a bad memory but it was also a learning experience - don't be totally dependent on one site or one blog.  You never know what can happen.  And don't make Google mad!

Great blog post Judy and a great business decision about not putting all your eggs in one basket.   Good risk management strategy there!

Interesting post. I happened to see your comments earlier today on an industry analyst site -- maybe Inman? -- going back and forth with Rosemarie Hicks. I love reading the one-on-one engagement on important topics. I'm glad I caught this post with your strategy tonight, thanks for sharing.

Greg - I know firsthand that it's best to spread yourself around, at least a little bit.

Leslie - I believe I was commenting on Inman - I'm not a paying member so I don't comment much there since I can't keep up with it after a while.  But some articles are worth writing a comment on, even though I won't be able to follow them.

I'm currently just at ActiveRain but eventually I hope to be able to do more. I did find it interesting at RainCamp that Ben Kinney and another agent said they pay $5 to $7 per blog to other people writing those blogs for them. Interesting. That's one way to do it.

Judy - WOW!!!  What a great post.  Although I do have my own website, I know I need to get a separate blog outside of AR.  I do have my posts syndicated to other blog syndication sites and I do know that I am getting good google juice from that but I know it's not enough.  Just doesn't seem to be enough hours in my day to do everything I'm doing now.

Oops, looks like I missed a couple comments.

Kent - I have no idea who Greg is - I must have been reading something with Greg in it.

Jim - I've heard of others paying for "ghost blog writers", in fact, an AR member learned the hard way that you really have to read what these paid writers are posting - not always factual.

Donne - It isn't easy posting on multiple sites, I haven't made an actual post on any of my blogs for a couple of weeks as I've been fixing my main website's blog.  I have a new format and have to go back to every past post I ever wrote on it and repost most clip-art/photos and reset categories.  It's taken up a lot of my time but I'm almost finished.
