Massachusetts Lands a Spot in the Top Five States for Business
Rising from its eighth place last year, Massachusetts was named number five in CNBC's "Top States for Business" for 2010.
This latest achievement made it the first time for any northeastern state to finish in the top five of this annual survey.
States are judged on ten different categories with the cost of doing business as one of the key factors. Some of the other categories are education, quality of life, economy, transportation, technology and innovation.
High marks were given to Massachusetts for its exemplary schools. And this was not limited only to its universities. Massachusetts' K-12 schools are among some of the best in the country.
Of course, Technology and Innovation were also highly favorable in the Commonwealth. No surprise there.
With the number of banks in our state, Access to Capital was also a strong suit.
Massachusetts' foreclosure rate is currently one out of 644 households. By comparison, Florida is one out of every 174 households, California is one out of every 186 households and Nevada has one out of every 79 homes in foreclosure.
Who would have thought that with a 9.2% unemployment rate that we would rank so highly in this type of study?
Kudos to the Commonwealth - with our chilly winters and high cost of living, there still is a great quality of life here in Massachusetts.

Congratulations, Claudette. That is surprising, given the unemployment rate. My finger got tired scrolling down to find CA.
