kitchen

Can't decide which color to go with?  This kitchen has a little representation of everything.

  • White Stove
  • Black Dishwasher
  • Stainless Steel Hood
  • Avocado Refrigerator

I guess if you can't make a choice - just throw everything at it but the kitchen sink.

Well, you can include that too.

Looks like they went to a thrift store and bought the best deals.  Funny.

They're creating their own trend.  Some people are just way ahead of their time . . . or behind it.

Claudette, is this colorful kitchen a listing of yours??  If it is you probably need to let the sellers see the comments you're going to get on this post!!

I bet it's hard to get matching Avocado appliances these days, Dump the fridge first...and buy a half black - half white replacement fridge, with stainless steel handle...or toss them all

That's being artistic. I work referrals. If you are interested let me know.

Hi Claudette, It still looks better than my "crazy" kitchen... Here's a photo of mine that I'm going to "bulldoze" in the next few weeks, especially the "Z-Brick" on the back 3 arched walls...  It's from the early 1970's...   ;>))

Jane:

That is a strong possibility.  Or, perhaps they just thought this was interesting?

Geri:

It looks a bit eclectic. Maybe they are former hippies.

Nick:

It is actually a property that I previewed for a buyer client. If it were a listing, we would be having a discussion.

Steve:

Avocado refrigerators are now in the "classic" category. Probably only sold for movie sets or shows like "Mad Men."

Ed:

Artistic? Yes.  Referrals are always a possibility.

Ann-Marie:

That kitchen is truly unique. Some would find it interesting, especially the archways.  Best of luck with your renovation. Please send us an "after" photo.

Dagny:

Yes, but do you actually want to see one?  (Most of these have been relegated to the basement area at this point.)

Dan:

We could put a price on it if we tried.

Surprisingly it does not look too bad. I have seen many updated kitchens look worse. I am guessing though the old cabinets may have been advocado colored. I have a client buying now and he asked if he should upgrade his advocado kitchen before selling?

I guess they could have gone with a black and white vinal floor.

That avocado brings back memories.  And I think our kitchen in Mom's house may have resembled this.  Microwave was black.  Stove was white.  Refrigerator was avocado, though eventually matched the white stove.

Gita:

I don't know - the white refrigerator would only match the stove.  What about the black dishwasher and stainless steel hood vent?

Kari:

I agree, the cabinets are nice-looking.  It seems odd that they would then mismatch the appliances.  Maybe they got them at a discount.

Corrine:

What was your answer?  Should he get rid of the avocado?

Richard:

Do you mean like a checkerboard?  That certainly would have been worse than this.

Gerry:

Yes, it is totally nostalgic.

Chris Ann:

Well then - I certainly did not mean to offend.  We all have our childhood memories. Our kitchen had white appliances but the bathroom fixtures were all pink. And, the house was pink.  (Reminiscent of a John Mellancamp song.)

Hi Claudette,

Life is interesting, isn't it. And the choices that result in the logic of home sellers wanting to move . The reason behind the choices do not always reflect on taste levels but sometimes on economic issues. What I did notice was that everything seems very clean and neat. That speaks more about the homeowners priorities ( the important ones). I bet all these appliances probably worked and have provided well for the household even if they do look a bit less than stunning. When it was decided to sell the property, it is often hard to justify buying new appliances especially in times when so much equity might have been already lost because of the economic downturn . From a professional's viewpoint though, coordinating apliances ( even if used ) could net the owners a bit more $$ but if they can't justify it, then it has to be what it is. A good post!

Claudette - When I first saw the refrigerator, I thought the color was "sage" a color that is really in right now.  I hadn't seen the color on a refrigerator before (other than as avocado in the 1970s).  Perhaps if it was marketed as "sage" it would appear more trendy in today's world:-)

Just a minute. The stainless sink matches the trim on the stove and the refrigerator. The dishwasher matches the black panel on the refrigerator. The teapot goes with the sink stove and fridge. The coffee pot goes with the dishwasher....And if you look carefully, there is a green "something or other" behind the sink that blends with the avocado refrigerator.

BTW, One of my listings is scheduled for settlement this month and all the appliances match! They are avocado. If you like, I will post a photo here.

William:

Yes, this is clean, neat and even attractive (at least the cabinets are.) I know, I don't completely get it unless they got such a great deal on all of these mismatched appliances.  But, it really would help the sale of the house to match at least a few of them, don't you think?

Myrl:

As they said in the "Wizard of Oz" now that is a horse of a different color.  Sage, indeed. Wonderful point.

Margaret:

Right you are - there are some great matches in this kitchen. It all depends on your "eye."  Yes, I would love to see a photo of that avocado kitchen.  Maybe we can bring that color back.
