Foreclosure or Short Sale? What Happens If I'm Still Living In The Home After Foreclosure?

After Foreclosure Los Angeles California

I've dealt with people having to move out of their homes after foreclosure and most of the time, it's not the greatest experience for them. They get a knock on the door one day or see a letter taped to their front door.

People worry about their credit after a foreclosure but what about their feelings? I remember a woman sobbing and saying she wanted to kill herself. She told me that she had bought the home with a pool and pictured having children that would eventually play in the pool. She and her husband started having money problems. He decided to leave and left her to handle the situation on her own. She filed for bankruptcy and the home ended up foreclosed. Who would want to rent to someone with a foreclosure on their credit record? Where would she go? The bank was offering her cash for keys -- money to help with some of her expense in exchange for the keys to the home being vacant. Well, she did move out when she was supposed to. One of the neighbors let her store some of her stuff at their place because she did not have enough room where she was moving. There was someone out there that understood her situation and was willing to give her a chance and a place to live. She was not crying anymore. She was moving on with her life after foreclosure.

If you or someone you know is facing foreclosure, you're not the only one. There is life after a foreclosure.

Sara, you're right about the emotional toll. A short sale enables the seller to exit with dignity.

I've had to do cash for keys several times with homeowners facing foreclosure. It's one of the saddest moments I've felt, when I've had to knock on the door and make coversation with these people. It usually has been a health problem, which made them end up losing a good paying job.

These stories never get easier to read.  The circumstances leading up to foreclosure are different for everyone but the emotional toll it takes is always substantial.

Sara, very sad indeed.  At least with a short sale, the end can be anticipated and the homeowner can leave with some dignity.  Foreclosure is just the pits.

Sara, they are both difficult situations with an array of emotions. The lack of contol is what does so many in. No money...they feel like their hands are tied. All those hopes and dreams fade away.

What's worse is the homes they are having to leave are being sold at half the cost or less and many know, if the bank had worked with them they could have stayed. So sad..

This was a photo that was on the back of a child's bedroom door at a short sale I showed.

Dan: Thanks.

Dave: Short sale is somewhat like the feeling of selling the home but a foreclosure makes them feel like the home's being taken away from them.

Paul: There could be different reasons why these homeowners end up in such a stressful situation. A lot of times they do not call right away when they get the notice on the door after foreclosure. Some people need a little time to respond.

Lori, John, Pamela, "Elite": Thanks for your comments. :)

Peggy: That photo is sad. I've seen people write things on walls like, "it's all yours", "here you go" after foreclosure. I guess they are trying to express themselves.
