Run! It is a Raccoon...

raccoonA quiet evening about 10:30 p.m. I check my BlackBerry as I am hoping to get another offer on a great listing we have.   I am getting sleepy watching TV with my husband and two large dogs.   Check the BlackBerry again...there is another offer...YES! I go into my office, sit down at my desk and start looking through the offer (in Montgomery County, Maryland our offers are typically 60 pages more or less so it can take some time).   I see a little movement under my desk...isn't is nice that my dog Kira wants to keep me company while I look this over.

ALL OF A SUDDEN!!!!!  BARK! BARK! BARK!
My other dog, Spenser starts going crazy...barking at Kira under the desk...

My husband runs in the room thinking the dog's bark wasn't right....

I look under the desk and instead of Kira....it is a Raccoon!   A Raccoon!  Yes, a Raccoon...

Not a dead Raccoon (because I do have two really big and tough dogs)....but a live RACCOON!!!

RUN!!!!  EVERYONE RUN!!!!

We run...close the door...how on earth is there a RACCOON under my desk?!?!?!

We call our County Division of Animal Services...they were the
re in 15 minutes....captured the Raccoon and caged it.   Whew!  It seemed over...until he told us that if it didn't injury anyone they had to let iKirat go on our property!   Yikes, that doesn't sound like a good plan.  Alas, it didn't injury anyone so it was let go...hopefully, never to be seen again by us.

But you can be sure...that I don't sit at my desk without looking and checking that it is Kira under my desk!

OMG! That would freak me out as well! I'm thinking of the commerical where the lady without eye glasses is calling in her cat and a racoon comes in her house!

Absolutely hysterical!  Last year my friend and colleague was sitting outside with her two grown sons and husband around the firepit and a skunk climbed up her leg! All ended well. :)

It was about the same size as the raccoon in the commercial...but Mama didn't want to snug it!

BTW, I don't live in a suburb of Washington, DC - I can walk to Metro.

Did you ever find out in entered the house?

I dealt with them for years when I lived in the country.  Never had to call animal services but sure used my 22 a lot.

We accidentally locked a racoon up in our laundry room one night after having the door opened for a quite a while to let some cooler air in.  Didn't know it was there until the next morning.  It knew where the door was!  The drywall was shredded.  Most unhappy little critter, had to use a broom to pry it out from behind the dryer and out the door.

Having them in our yard is pretty common, but for the most part they haven't been a problem for us.  The joys of living in the woods!

Wow- what a great story!  I occasionally get a squirrel in the springtime sneaking in to the kitchen to steal dog food, but this takes the cake!

Thank God you were not hurt, those things have serious nails.

Hi Yvette, I would have let out a YELP and jumped on top of the desk for sure! Hope your offers were good ones and that listing is on it's way to being sold!
