Guidelines to Becoming a Localism Master
GUIDELINES ON BECOMING A LOCALISM MASTER
Sounds arrogant, doesn't it?
I can tone it down - how ‘bout a great Localism writer? A good one?
Heck, maybe you don't even WANT to write Localism posts. If that's the case, perhaps your time is better spent elsewhere rather than reading this. To each his/her own.
I think there is tremendous value in writing Localism posts (can you say Google? Leads?). And they are one of my favorite articles to write, so I tend to write a bunch of them.
AND they get traffic. There are some that have over 11,000 clicks, especially the posts about communities. And many of these Localism articles get on page 1 of Google the day they are written and stay there. Arrogant? I think not.
- all be linked together with a community article
- shared with business owners (who may use them in their marketing), and
- passed along to folks who are relocating to the area
Sometimes you get lucky and they get noticed by the media and other blog sites. But I suspect I am preaching to the choir, here.
So how DO you become a master Localism writer?

Those of you who are already, please chime in!!
Write about what interests you
It may be a business, tourist attraction, shop, or restaurant you are not familiar with but this is how you learn more about it - people will come to think of you are the neighborhood expert. But also write about places that will interest others. And hitting a newly-opened shop or restaurant is a great way to garner some attention, and the owners will appreciate the publicity.
Be enthusiastic
Enthusiasm will make the article more appealing. If you're bored, readers may be too.
Visit the place personally
Can you write about something you have not visited? Yeah, but it will be more effective it you see it for yourself, especially if you have never been there.
For heaven's sake, take your own photos
Lots of them so you can pick the best. Consider creating a slide show with Real Estate Shows (you can turn the slide show into a video and post it on YouTube, too).
Add a video
There is nothing more real than a video, with YOUR voice sharing what you are experiencing, except actually being there. Your own little reality show.
Write the article as if you are there, in person
Describing a place from your armchair takes away from the reality so try to write as if you are sitting there. Not always easy to do, but consider "composing" your post as you tour around. Video will help.
Get the inside scoop
If you can, talk to the owner or someone who works there and is willing to share. Their perspective will add a more personal touch and provide insight that simply touring the place will not provide.
Write, write, write
The more you write, the more comfortable you will feel. And read other's posts to get ideas. Practice makes perfect.
Of course when you post you want to make sure you post in the Localism category and drill down by county, city and even neighborhood if you can.
So all you Localism writers...what are your thoughts? What makes YOU a master Localism poster?
