nest

OK, I admit it - when I first read Colleen's post on this 'outside blog reading contest', I thought there was no way I'd be interested in that at all.  Why?  Because I was too comfy right here in my own little comfy cushy quilt-lined safety nest here in Active Rain

I rarely venture out into the blogosphere unless something in a post I read here completely compells me to, or unless I go out to look longingly at some of the real beauties here from some of my AR pals.  But then I hurry right back here to my nice little nest.....

After much stewing and hemming and hawing about it, I decided I needed to get a grip and just get outside my nest, and see what's going on in the other blogging worlds out there.  After a few (more than a few!) pokes and prods from well-meaning friends, I did just that.Mountains

I checked out a number of them on the list on the contest post, and I saw some more great blogs in the list janeAnne put together for us.  And then.........I found a few more and a few more and a few more, and before I knew it, I was actually ENJOYING what I was doing!  Who knew????

So many great posts were bookmarked that I read, and I've finally culled them down to these three that I really wanted to share here with you.  And I hope those who take the time to check them out enjoy them as much as I did!

                                 DIstinctivePhoenix.com Blog

DistintivePhoenix.com has some great writing and really cool pictures on it.  I found an article written by Greg Swan, "Why didn't your house sell? Price, preparation, presentation - and availability ", to be a great read for sellers in this market.  It's concise and to the point, and states in simple terms exactly why many properties aren't selling right now.

I know I like to give my sellers and potential sellers articles that will be of benefit to them and to me, and this is certainly one of those.  The old saying that "50 miles and a briefcase make an expert", can also apply in writings as well.  Sure, I can say what Greg has so succinctly written, but seeing it in print written by someone else lends credence to what you're saying.  Here it is, all done up for you!

candy

RSSPieces.com
is just chalk-full of VERY helpful and useful information on blogging - what to do, what not to do, how to do it, why, etc.  Mary McKnight writes great articles that are helpful to bloggers of all stages, but especially to those of us who are still looking for a little help or a little encouragement that we're headed in the right direction.  And who can't use some tips and great ideas every now and then?

I found this article, "The Ten Commandments of Blogging and Commenting" to be a great read to recommend to everyone.  This is the perfect 'how-to" post on blogging and creating great relationships around the blogosphere.  It's easy for some to get caught up in not-so-great behavior, and her post explains very nicely some great common-sense guidelines.

                                 BloodhoundBlog

The 3rd blog I read, BloodhoundRealty.com blog, was a little intimidating to me at first because it was so 'famous'.  But then, I found this article by Jeff Brown, Bawldguy.com, and it really kinda hit home with me.

"Real Estate Bloggers - Why Are You Blogging? What Currency Does Your Banker Accept? " made me realize that although there are many people out there that are talked about as the 'experts in the blogging world', maybe some of them really aren't, and maybe, just maybe, we should really be paying attention to what our own blogs are doing for us, instead of what those 'experts' tell us we should be doing.

Sure, Jeff talks about the last Inman Connect conference, but that's NOT really what spoke to me in this article.  It's all about measuring the success of your blog not by how the experts talk, but by the business you derive from it.  If you're getting business from it, ignore those who criticize you and tell you to do things differently.  Read the questions he asks - these will open your eyes if nothing else did!

He closed his post with these words, which I LOVE.....  "Real estate pros from all parts of the country, offering all the different but related services, might want to think about focusing on $EO a little more than SEO - you might just find your banker is happier to see you coming."   If you're getting business from your blog, you're doing something right - keep it up!!

clouds

So, after my beginner's journey out into the blogosphere, and finding these 3 articles to pass on to you, I can tell you that my "comfy cushy quilt-lined safety nest here in Active Rain" has just gotten bigger, and will, in all likelihood, continue to grow.....  and my thanks to Laurie Manny and Colleen Kulikowski for this challenge that prodded me to get outside my comfort zone!

Hi Neal - thanks for reading!  This contest was a real challenge for me as I just really don't do much blog reading outside AR at all  I find it to be quite intimidating.   BUT I learned a lot today in all the blogs I visited, AND I'll continue to move around 'out there'.  I subscribed to some of the blogs I read, too.

Hi Missy - I usually do the same, but for different reasons - jus figure my stuff isn't good enough for whatver the contests are.  But this one intrigued me after a bit, so I took the leap.  Thanks for the feedback on the poss I chose, and glad you enjoyed them, too.

Hey Monika - Yep, it actually was fun doing all that exploring today.  I got very little on my to-do list for today done, but this was well-worth it, I felt.   I've followed Mary's posts since I basically bookmarked almost every post she wrote here, and I do subscribe to her blog, too.  I'd never read Bloodhound until today, although I've heard about it for some time now.  I really liked alot of the posts I read on DistinctivePhoenix - liked the post and I enjoyed the layout & pictures, too.

Ann - You picked some great ones for your first time out of the nest. Greg Swann with his Bloodhound Blog and many featured guest writers is an amazing work of literary art for the real estate industry. Albeit a bit controversial at times, it is enlightening, entertaining and educational.

Mary McKnight has provided a wealth of knowledge to me many times in this process called blogging.

Good Luck in the contest.

Ann - I know exactly how you felt....but it only gets better.  The reality is that a lot of the posts here in AR are for us, for people in the industry and for blogging but out there you get different perspectives on how really talented writers talk to the consumer.  It's not easy, and there are soooo many different ways.  btw, Jeff Brown has some awesome articles and seems like a really nice and down to earth kindda guy.

Ann....  LOL... I am only laughing because of your comments about Jeff Brown and what he wrote. I just wrote a quick rant on this and the blogs that I am reading here on AR. I didn't take Laurie's challenge because I have been extremely busy. But I do go outside of AR and read other blogs. Mainly those of the mortgage industry.

Overall, I think you did a good job here and again, what's funny is that you some what talked about what I had mentioned. I think there are so many here on AR that think they are experts. But I find more of them outside the rain. And lastly, yes, if you are getting clients, then you must be doing something write. I am getting a lot of e-mails and calls in the last month and I just landed my 2nd client in less than a week, just from blogging. I have a 3rd that looks very good as we speak.   Again, nice job.

Hi Paula -  thanks for liking my choices!  I did really enjoy exploring the Bloodhound blog - it was really very eye-appealing which drew me in even further.  And of course, Mary has LOADS of great info - so many of my bookmarked posts here are from when she was here.  Thanks!

Hi Joan - thanks for the b-day greetings!  I had a great day and spent part of it with Jay & Monika at a cookout that friends of ours had - great fun!  This contest, and MUCH prodding, got me to check out the blogs I mentioned and many others, too.  There's a lot of great stuff out there, fun to read and some great stuff to learn from, too.

Hey Ines - I know you know exactly how I feel, and you got it fast!  I trust that it will get better, actually I know it will from my adventures out there yesterday.  it's like the first time I walked into a huge Home Depot by myself - I was so overwhelmed by the sheer size of the store that I just turned right around and walked back to my car.  I had to have Bear come back with me, and now I go there all the time.  Funny analogy, huh?  But that's the way it is/was.......  I really liked Jeff's writing -  I found some other stuff of his, too.

Hey Colleen - thanks!  I took the challenge and jumped right in as best I could!

Hi Jeff - I hope by now you've stopped laughing at me!!  I know, you were laughing WITH me, right?!?!?  I saw someone else write about that same post, and they had an entirely different slant than mine.  We can all read the same thing and come away with completely different interpretations.  I haven't seen your post, but will go find it after I finish up here.  And it sounds like you're doing exactly what Jeff was trying to say - if it's working and bringing you business, you're doing something right despite what the 'experts' may say.  Good for you!!  I like hearing success stories like yours - gives us all faith in what we're doing and trying to do.

Hi Jennifer - thanks for the comments, and try just a little bit at a time.  That's what I did and found that I had to bring myself back to my work or I would have spent far too many hours reading away.  But it was fun and educational at the same time.

Miss Maggie- thank you for that really nice compliment - I really appreciate that!  And you're very welcome - it certainly expanded mine, and I plan to continue that kind of reading.  I found some really neat blogs that I subscribed to, so that will force me to continue this one way or the other!!  ;-)

Deb- it did take me some time, too.  I started just by sorta skimming some of the blogs because some I stopped by just really didn't grab me so I moved on.  I worked with the list that Colleen & Laurie put together on the first contest post they did and I also used the list from janeAnne's post - both had some great suggestions.  I started with those that had names that caught my attention, and then moved on from there.  I even found some blogs to visit within those blogs - kinda cool how you just travel around.  But I was also keeping an eye on the clock, too, because I could see how it could very easily eat up some precious time.  I will say I learned a lot while visiting a lot of the blogs - fun, too.

nah, I was laughing at you. I just don't get so many people on here....  they write touchy feely stuff. Sally pointed out to me that I also write this kind of stuff. I went back, yes I do. But I also write about a lot of mortgage products. I just got another e-mail today from someone in Missouri that is really being lied to...on 2 different accounts and this is sad. But I can't help because I am not licensed there. I did pass it onto another AR member.

In any case...  it's funny in regards to my rant. I thought my basic message was loud and clear, but some of the comments are mentioning other little things that I mentioned. Maybe you can let me know what you think... lol  And I won't laugh at you.  ;o)
