Today's adventure was at the Fort Mott State  Park. (www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/fortmott.html)

Located in Pennsville, NJ, Fort Mott State Park is the site of a former US Army coastal defense fort.  Established in 1896, Fort Mott was built to strengthen the defenses of the Delaware River.  Fort Mott consisted of five gun batteries ranging in size from 3-inch rapid fire guns to the massive 12-inch rifles on disappearing carriages which could fire a thousand pound projectile 9 miles down river.

An Army base until 1944, Fort Mott now provides recreational activities as well as historic structures and fortifications.  The New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail's Delsea Region Welcome Center is located in the fomer ordinance building which provides local and site specific displays.  The annual 'Living History Weekend' along the Delaware River began today.  Here is a picture of the 'Range Finding Tower' at the Fort Mott State Park.  It is rarely open for tours so today was a special treat.

Consider visiting Fort Mott soon.

Just a thought for today.

Reminds me of the old fire towers we used to have in the south that the state forestry rangers worked out to be on the "look out" for fires.  I used to live in NJ and hope to visit again sometime.  I'll have to add this to my list of "must see while I'm there".

Now that's a great structure.  Every state, city or town has it's very own history.  Rich content and something to boast about. This is a shining example.
