I read an article the other day about a gentleman named Jay Shafer, who gave up living in his 4000 square foot home to live in a hand built 89 square foot house.  Amazingly, by taking some of the design styles that Frank Lloyd Wright incorporated into his architecture, Jay was able to build a house that has all the amenities needed without all the extra "stuff" that others tend to collect over the years.  The house, he lovingly calls "Tumbleweed" has a kitchen, bath, bedroom, living area with furniture and of course a front porch.  The house cost 13,000 to build and has utility costs of around $100 per year.

After being featured on CNN, Jay was contacted by a number of others who were intrigued by the ingenuity, cost, and simplicity of a tiny home.  So much so, that he now builds them for others.  Click on the photo below to see a video of how they are made.

Since the TINY HOUSE is below the required size for the Uniform Building Code, its foundation is actually a trailer, which deems it a mobile home.  Jay however does build the SMALL HOUSE, which is 120 SF or more (UBC compliant),

His story is unique, his life is unique and his mission is reminiscent of the pioneering American spirit.

Fascinating.  I understand that there is a movement to go smaller in housing and this certainly fits the bill.  Thanks for the links!

My clothing closet is bigger than that.  I've seen several stories of people living in these tiny houses.  It's much better than being homeless and very affordable.  IF I HAD TO, I could do it.... have to have a huge yard sale first.  But since I DON'T have to, I don't think it's my cup of tea.

Rich:  I like the concept behind this ... and I think we're beginning to see the "smaller is better and smarter" home being built and embraced by builders and homebuyers alike.  This small?  Uhhhh ... maybe not ...

There is actually quite a push for smaller homes lately. I been watching this guy and others in Mother Earth News.

The challange is to part with all of the junk. You can only fit so much in a small house, but this why it draws some people. They want to live with less.

It would be an interesting house to market as a REALTOR.

That square footage works well for the prison system.

Sometimes I'm embarrasses to admit that the two of us live in a 3,800 square foot home.  But I'm comfortable in it, and it's great for entertaining.  Can't imagine Jay has a lot of fun parties at his place . . .

He also has a bigger house now that he is married. When he wanted to throw a party he rented a space.

Tumbleweed would be fun to see. Neat story. 4000 sq ft down to this is really a lifestyle change.

Well if I understand what I am reading up till now (via responses) this is too small.

I think the idea is what we live in is too big and I think thats just as correct as 89 sq feet is too small.

If we are going to have a sustainable scenario for our kids/grandkids we need to find some middle

ground here. Before someone asks the pointed question whats your square footage .. it's too big.

I just think that at some point we need to stop being driven by what we think is important and

discovering what is. I think something like this crazy guy's lifestyle is a fascinating first step.

I applaud his bravery.

Excellent comments from everybody.  Most of you would choose not to live in a place this size, understandably.  While a select few may brave the size.  Most of us with families obviously could not even fathom this possibility, as close quarters usually inflicts damage on even the closest of kin.

Rich...I was renting bootlegged properties many years ago right across the street from the beach and you would be surprised not only on what people will pay for a closet sized room just big enough to hold a bed, frig, toilet and hotplate, but how fast they go once they come on the market......and they stay there for years.....I even had two guys rent garages out, fix them up and sleep there. One of them had bunk beds.......

Thank you

I dream about living in a very small house...someday I'll likely be a widow (hubby's 10 years my senior) and only daughter will get her own life, so I can then downsize to my heart's content. I just need room for myself and a cat. Love it! Check out "The Tiny Book of Tiny Houses" - it's been on my bedside table for years - I look at it and meditate on simplicity when I cannot sleep.

Last year we built a group of four tiny (400 sq ft) homes near the beach.  I was surprised when we sold them that 2 of the buyers were going to live there full time.   There is a whole community of people out there who are really into these small homes.  Right now we are building our second set.  This time there are three, and they are slightly larger.  (476 sq ft), but it's been a lot of fun designing them

Wow, Laurie.  400 sq ft near the beach is a great idea.  Someone who appreciates outdoor activities really doesnt need all the indoor space
