Meaning of "Ipso Facto"

The latin expression "ipso facto" means "assuming this fact, then it follows that", or "by reason of the fact".

The term often refers to something which is a straightforward conclusion or something which is self-evident.

The expression is commonly used in law, philosophy and science.

In a legal sense, let's assume that the law only permits one marriage between two spouses. If either spouse attempted to marry a second person without the dissolution of the first marriage by annulment or divorce the second marriage would be "ipso facto" void.

That is, the second marriage, simply by reason of the first marriage would be void. No other information is really necessary of required. No other facts need be known. The first marriage and the fact of that marriage alone, leads to the necessary conclusion that the second marriage is void.

There are many real estate uses. Without a severance, the property, ipso facto remains as the original parcel.
