Don't Throw Out That Sexy Pink Refrigerator!

Pink FrigidaireAhhhh... "those were the good old days," my Mom and Dad used to say.

I can well remember the story of an old Sears refrigerator that they carted all over Wyoming to Laredo Texas when my Dad was in the Air Force back in the 50's.

Then they packed it to Richmond, Kentucky and used it for years. Later, it was installed in a apartment and it might still be there!

It's over 50 years old!

They don't make them like they used to!

I was up for the task when a friend mentioned the ugly pink refrigerator in an apartment they bought at auction and were renovating.

"Let me see it... I need a picture of it's ugliness for my story!" I said.

Off we went to check it out. Sure enough....it sho was ugly!

Can you imagine a marketing sales meeting at Frigidare where they discussed the latest line of colors and someone suggested pink? Who would vote for that?

The whole reason of my story was really to discuss why appliances are not made like they used to be?

They are breaking down after a few years and the parts are sooo expensive! Why is that? It's almost cheaper to buy a new one. That's the whole idea! Nothing is made well anymore.

If it were made sturdy like a tank there would be no need to buy a new one unless it were pink and you change the decor.

Here's more of the discussion and why we are almost forced to buy new appliances.

Finding a new home in the Bluegrass has never been so easy!

I actually like those avacado green ones now. Back in the 70's I thought them to be pretty ugly.

My grandmother had a pink one. I wonder why they never have come back in style? She had pink cabinets, red counter-top and red vinyl floor. I enjoyed seeing this, Liz it brought back memories.

Never had pink appliances but my parents did have yellow. But, I confess, I had avocado colored appliances in the 70's. I laughed at the part of the article where the woman in England held the repair guy hostage until he finished the repairs. One thing to consider, todays appliances generally cost less, in today's dollars, than the industrial strength machines of the 50's.

Our garage frig stopped staying cool.  It ran, but nothing was cold anymore.  We called a guy to look at it for a charge of $60 only to tell us they don't make those pumps anymore and he could rebuild it for $500.  What!!!!  So, we sent him on his way $60 richer and went to Lowe's for a new frig for $380.  You couldn't tell us that over the phone?  Heads-up!  Your fridge may be so old it isn't worth repairing.  What a great business concept!  Show up, poke around, overquote a repair, and walk away with $60.
