Barns are an important feature of the history of the Hudson Valley.  This  Hudson Valley Dutch Barn in Red Hook, New York is a popular photography subject; and I have had the opportunity to photograph it in several seasons.

Because some of the farmland in the area was sold off, some barns have been converted for other purposes.  However due to the historical nature of many of these barns,  there are organizations dedicated to the preservation of this segment of American history.

This photo captures a way of life in a bygone era.  As you indicated above, history can be preserved -and told- in many ways.  Preservation whether urban or rural, allows us and future generations to experience history in a three dimensional manner.
