Could you Live in 89 Square Feet?
Thanks to Rich Edgley for allowing his post to be Re-Blogged. Watch the video, could you live in 89 square feet? Have you ever been in a Rush Creek house, the Usonian community in Worthington? Rush Creek Village homes are way bigger than 89 square feet. Huge in comparison to the homes being built today. The connection is the design principles of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Rich is a Chicago area home inspector. I love Rich's company's FLW looking logo.
I read an article the other day about a gentleman named Jay Shafer, who gave up living in his 4000 square foot home to live in a hand built 89 square foot house. Amazingly, by taking some of the design styles that Frank Lloyd Wright incorporated into his architecture, Jay was able to build a house that has all the amenities needed without all the extra "stuff" that others tend to collect over the years. The house, he lovingly calls "Tumbleweed" has a kitchen, bath, bedroom, living area with furniture and of course a front porch. The house cost 13,000 to build and has utility costs of around $100 per year.
After being featured on CNN, Jay was contacted by a number of others who were intrigued by the ingenuity, cost, and simplicity of a tiny home. So much so, that he now builds them for others. Click on the photo below to see a video of how they are made.
Since the TINY HOUSE is below the required size for the Uniform Building Code, its foundation is actually a trailer, which deems it a mobile home. Jay however does build the SMALL HOUSE, which is 120 SF or more (UBC compliant),
His story is unique, his life is unique and his mission is reminiscent of the pioneering American spirit.
