This is a great post from Paul Peck about redoing/updating a typical ceiling with grid lighting.

It's a common dilemma among condo owners that I'm sure most of you have seen. The ugly out dated grid lighting system in a Condominium or Home. Whether your trying to sell a condo, trying to give suggestions on remodeling or your looking for an easy update. This process that I have developed will turn any of these eyesore's into a show piece that the buyers will love and their neighbors will envy.

Kitchen Light Before:

After Kitchen Light is removed. It's time for a little drywall and mud work:

After the drywall was repaired, It was ready for me to apply a new and modern texture called Skip Trowel:

After the Skip Trowel was applied we added crown molding around the perimeter of the new kitchen trey ceiling:

Primed and painted with Sherwin Williams Super Paint:

Florecent lights were installed behind the crown molding for an elegant look:

Debra:  HUGE difference!  I never would have known that it was an old outdated looking panel like that.

Debra, I've always liked the look of lighting behind crown molding or above kitchen cabinets.  I'd also like to add that the skip trowel type of ceiling texture is about the only kind of texture I like on ceilings...I've learned to hate dislike the popcorn style ceilings.  Some builders actually do that to walls so they have less finish time.  Love the lighting though.

That is sooooooo cool.  Thanks for sharing this...I have "shop lights" in my kitchen because I took the whole false ceiling down and have been wondering what to do.  Thanks for the idea.

Hey Debra, I love the step by step photos and explanation :) I do not know if you do this already, but maybe consider creating a blog or e-book that is solely on "do it your self simple projects to improve your home."  Just as you showed here you can explain with pics and simple writing, I can see it know.  Just gather your material along your way, as you complete projects...the same with how you decorate.
