This year's Arizona monsoon season has been very wet. This can create a situation for mosquito breeding grounds. The worry about this issue is that mosquito breeding grounds are subject to West Nile Virus. As a precaution, the local schools in Apache Junction Unified School District including Apache Junction and Gold Canyon, are all having their grounds checked for standing water. Also all the facilities will be fogged beginning Saturday August 4th and Saturday August 11th. After that, fogging will be done every other Saturday through November. School officials feel this is in the best interest of the children and has been recommended by public health officials. Officials are also recommending to parents that they use a mosquito repellent containing DEET on their children before they leave for school in the mornings in order to reduce the chance of being bitten by mosquitos while waiting for a school bus or while on the buses.
