I was memed by Carole Cohen a number of weeks ago. After reading her article I left a comment that it might be a bit before I wrote my post. And that has proven to be true...actually far longer than I intended. I didn't forget, I simply wasn't sure what to write about, and despite starting, I'm still not sure. We'll see what transpires. Stream of consciousness...
Carole's article, because of her being memed by Bonnie Ericson (our blog mother, as Carole says), is about technology and media. Don't laugh at this, but I'm old enough that technology used to refer to computers the size of a room, or at least a bath room, and PCs were just a dream. MACs didn't exist. Computer class in undergrad was via computer cards...god forbid you dropped the whole stack (I did, at least once). But since the focus here really is supposed to be on media (yes, I can follow the rules when I choose to...my mother would never agree, however) I suppose I should focus.
Radio - I listen to radio regularly, preferring music (jazz and classical) as opposed to talk shows and the like. I do like NPR and catch that from time to time. When I lived in Minnesota it was a favorite show on chore day - Saturdays. Michael Feinstein was always fun to listen to. I have listened to Click and Clack a few times but am usually at the gym when it comes on. Commercials on the radio drive me nuts.
TV - not a favorite of mine. I will watch some HGTV stuff and occasionally a documentary but the commercials, lame commentary, and idiotic sitcoms drive me crazy. Reality TV? Give me a break. I have no use for it. I get to see enough idiots in real life, I don't want to spend my precious time in front of the electronic babysitter (remember that?) watching a bunch of fools.
The Internet - well, it's my friend and has been for years. I remember when it all got started, and while I was not immediately involved I got going fairly early. I get my news on it, shop regularly, make all my restaurant, travel and hotel arrangements on it, and so on. I am a bit of an email fanatic - I think the bug hit at one of the companies I worked for. People used to email to others in the next cubicle - part of the technology culture I guess.
My kids were very impressed when I got my iPod a few years back (but then they are impressed whenever I do anything with technology - it is such a natural for them and they seem to know everything). It was great...for a year or so. I love iTunes and created all sorts of playlists for the gym - my BOSE headphones are great for listening to iTune Radio while on the computer. But my iPOD died - I'm not convinced it isn't a conspiracy by Apple. And I haven't replaced it yet. Oh, and remember the Atari? Our kids first computer, way back in Minnesota. Bentley Bear was a great game.
I love my BOSE surround sound system, for both music and movies. I have several thousand songs stored on my BOSE and often have it play nonstop during the day or evening when working at home. I have another Bose in my living room - is that over-indulgent? And regarding movies...well, Netflix is pretty cool. But I have a confession...I have NOT been in a movie theatre in over 10 years - I am probably one of the few people in the entire country.. I figure if it's a movie I want to see (and there aren't many) it'll come out on DVD and I can buy or rent it for far less, and dump on MY couch, in MY house, with a brandy or something similar in hand.
I am getting more into social networking. Still trying to figure it out - not so much how it works but the value, beyond keeping in touch with friends. Facebook, Gather, Prosper, Twitter, Jaiku, Tumblr, MyBlogLog, MySpace...Yikes. And I thought just being on AR was keeping me busy.
Print media is still very important to me. I used to be a prodigious reader (see I DO have a 12th grade vocabulary) and could spit out a book or more a day. OK, War and Peace (I've read it twice) took me two days. Used to read a lot of philosophy, too. And grad school reading was unbelievable. But all that has changed. I seem to be stuck with psychological mysteries (oops, veering off into the book meme I still need to do) late at night if I am done blogging and not quite ready to sleep, and stuff on blogging, real estate, and technology. I do a lot of on-line reading too.
Magazines are also something that I seem to need. Being an art collector and former art gallery owner we have a zillion art mags. And being the foodie that I am, Bon Appetit and Gourmet, plus the Wine Spectator are also ever-present. There's something about having something in your hand to read, as opposed to looking at it on-line. Archaic I suppose. I don't care and neither should you.
My Blackberry and I have been together for some time - well, through several permutations. I check email at the stop lights and when sitting in traffic - not good. But I am considering the TREO or the iPhone (but come on, only AT & T?). My life - contacts, calendar, email - is in my Blackberry. I had a Blue Tooth headset when they first came out - my colleagues were way impressed. And they should have been.
I imagine you're bored now, if you are even still here. Well I did my job. Now MY folks to meme....hmmm, who is deserving?
Okeydoke. I am meming Lisa Hammerstein, Sally Cheeseman, Brad Andersohn, and Sharon Simms. Wonder what interesting tidbits THEY will have to share?
Yeah....we'll just see about this. The only stuff we watch on tv are....well you'll just have to wait and see. At least you do the iPod thing. I have no clue. Well, thanks for sharing....I'm way boring compared to you...I don't even have nor want a Blackberry.....I'm trying to pretend that I don't need glasses ....so I got a RAZR to see the numbers....or at least feel for them...haha! Thanks for sharing...will get started tomorrow...gotta get off...hubbie coming home from work.
