I was memed by Carole Cohen a number of weeks ago. After reading her article I left a comment that it might be a bit before I wrote my post. And that has proven to be true...actually far longer than I intended. I didn't forget, I simply wasn't sure what to write about, and despite starting, I'm still not sure. We'll see what transpires. Stream of consciousness...

Carole's article, because of her being memed by Bonnie Ericson (our blog mother, as Carole says), is about technology and media. Don't laugh at this, but I'm old enough that technology used to refer to computers the size of a room, or at least a bath room, and PCs were just a dream. MACs didn't exist. Computer class in undergrad was via computer cards...god forbid you dropped the whole stack (I did, at least once). But since the focus here really is supposed to be on media (yes, I can follow the rules when I choose to...my mother would never agree, however) I suppose I should focus.

Radio - I listen to radio regularly, preferring music (jazz and classical) as opposed to talk shows and the like. I do like NPR and catch that from time to time. When I lived in Minnesota it was a favorite show on chore day - Saturdays. Michael Feinstein was always fun to listen to. I have listened to Click and Clack a few times but am usually at the gym when it comes on. Commercials on the radio drive me nuts.

TV - not a favorite of mine. I will watch some HGTV stuff and occasionally a documentary but the commercials, lame commentary, and idiotic sitcoms drive me crazy. Reality TV? Give me a break. I have no use for it. I get to see enough idiots in real life, I don't want to spend my precious time in front of the electronic babysitter (remember that?) watching a bunch of fools.

The Internet - well, it's my friend and has been for years. I remember when it all got started, and while I was not immediately involved I got going fairly early. I get my news on it, shop regularly, make all my restaurant, travel and hotel arrangements on it, and so on. I am a bit of an email fanatic - I think the bug hit at one of the companies I worked for. People used to email to others in the next cubicle - part of the technology culture I guess.

My kids were very impressed when I got my iPod a few years back (but then they are impressed whenever I do anything with technology - it is such a natural for them and they seem to know everything). It was great...for a year or so. I love iTunes and created all sorts of playlists for the gym - my BOSE headphones are great for listening to iTune Radio while on the computer. But my iPOD died - I'm not convinced it isn't a conspiracy by Apple. And I haven't replaced it yet. Oh, and remember the Atari? Our kids first computer, way back in Minnesota. Bentley Bear was a great game.

I love my BOSE surround sound system, for both music and movies. I have several thousand songs stored on my BOSE and often have it play nonstop during the day or evening when working at home. I have another Bose in my living room - is that over-indulgent? And regarding movies...well, Netflix is pretty cool. But I have a confession...I have NOT been in a movie theatre in over 10 years - I am probably one of the few people in the entire country.. I figure if it's a movie I want to see (and there aren't many) it'll come out on DVD and I can buy or rent it for far less, and dump on MY couch, in MY house, with a brandy or something similar in hand.

I am getting more into social networking. Still trying to figure it out - not so much how it works but the value, beyond keeping in touch with friends. Facebook, Gather, Prosper, Twitter, Jaiku, Tumblr, MyBlogLog, MySpace...Yikes. And I thought just being on AR was keeping me busy.

Print media is still very important to me. I used to be a prodigious reader (see I DO have a 12th grade vocabulary) and could spit out a book or more a day. OK, War and Peace (I've read it twice) took me two days. Used to read a lot of philosophy, too. And grad school reading was unbelievable. But all that has changed. I seem to be stuck with psychological mysteries (oops, veering off into the book meme I still need to do) late at night if I am done blogging and not quite ready to sleep, and stuff on blogging, real estate, and technology.  I do a lot of on-line reading too.

Magazines are also something that I seem to need. Being an art collector and former art gallery owner we have a zillion art mags. And being the foodie that I am, Bon Appetit and Gourmet, plus the Wine Spectator are also ever-present. There's something about having something in your hand to read, as opposed to looking at it on-line. Archaic I suppose. I don't care and neither should you.

My Blackberry and I have been together for some time - well, through several permutations. I check email at the stop lights and when sitting in traffic - not good. But I am considering the TREO or the iPhone (but come on, only AT & T?). My life - contacts, calendar, email - is in my Blackberry. I had a Blue Tooth headset when they first came out - my colleagues were way impressed. And they should have been.

I imagine you're bored now, if you are even still here. Well I did my job. Now MY folks to meme....hmmm, who is deserving?

Okeydoke. I am meming Lisa Hammerstein, Sally Cheeseman, Brad Andersohn, and Sharon Simms. Wonder what interesting tidbits THEY will have to share?

Jeff, No matter what you do, your old picture must be lingering. Is your hat at half twist or are you just looking backwards, lol. Your MeMe is fun to read. See lots in common , at least on what interests you. Maybe it's a REALTOR thing, lol.

But hey my Ipod still works, no room left on it, but it gets a real work out. I am the Ipod accessory king. If I don't have one of all that stuff, I might even have duplicates. But I can charge it from just about anywhere there is power.

Great post and fun to read. I am on POST Strike. I haven't posted in several days, and I feel ashamed. Right.

Besides I don't know how to a write a feggin paragraph and post it. So I figured I must be doing it all wrong.  Seems my comments for some of the posts I have commented on are 2 to 3 times longer than their original post. Then I don't want them to feel bad, so I cut at least half of it, and then it is only twice as long as their post.

I don't seem to have the function of the spell checker. I get an error message that says.
"cannot execute AJAX call. Server didn't return valid XML". Do you have any idea what the heck that means? Is it my end or theirs?

Mary- actually I don't see myself as much of a techie. I feel rather naive about stuff, but maybe I just expect more. Who knows. Glad you stopped by and thanks for commenting.

William- yeah, I was getting the same error message but it looks like they have the spellchecker working now.  Interesting that there are some similarities. I didn't mention my iPod accessories - thought that was overkill. I think I rattled my iPOD too much at the gym  it has moving parts that get screwy, or so I'm old. Too cheap and lazy to go take it in and get a new device. Thanks for stopping in.

Are you heading up to Irvine on the 25th?

Jeff, I make fun of my husband for listening to NPR. I tell him: in order to become an announcer on NPR you have to have no personality what so ever. LOL. However, I listen to it when he is around.

Hi Jeff I am not sure about Irvine. I really wanted to go but it doesn't even start till 8:00PM and ......I just don't know as yet. Have discussed going earlier in the day but not sure I know as yet..

I have heard that if your warranty is expired on the Ipod and they can't fix it, they offer a great deal on a replacement. Retail plus 10%. Just kidding, I think they actually will sell new for regular retail. When mine breaks and I do hope it is soon, I want a Nano. I have the mini now. The Nano is my kinda size. Small enough to put in your pocket or wear out. The mini always gets caught when i am driving on the seat belt for some strange reason. Yeah the spell checker is actually working . I don't like ATT or I would get the iphone.

Jeff - We share many of the same techie devices. I have not ventured too far into Social networking sites, just a few. Like you, I am trying to figure out the value.

So much to learn, so much to do.

Jeff, a former art collector and gallery owner,  Wow, nice to know that about you. I've probably been to 1 or 2 movies in 10 years. Ha, I like to watch them at home IF and when one is good enough.

I'm still anticipating my first BOSE.  One day... Loved reading this Jeff.  No snoozies here.  I also like your new picture!  I noticed it up on my subscription list a few weeks ago and failed to mention it.  It's very playful.

Jeff,

Thanks for the tag and now I'm afraid you will probably have to wait as well.  Great read and I enjoyed the walk down memory lane to a time when computers were the size of a Powder Room! :)  I know!  Maybe I'll drag Bob into this little exercise!

William. Yep, I understand you can get a new Nano for 10% off or something if you bring in your iPod. See? What a great gimmick for them. Program my purchase to break so I need to buy another. I don't think so.

I agree on the start time - it's kinda late. Even if you only stay a couple of hours it'll be hard to be home much before midnight. I might go a little earlier as I think others are too. We'll see.

"Michael Feinstein" the singer or Michael Feldman on "What do you know?" or maybe it is "Whadya Know?'  or some other spelling....  out of Madison WI.

I remember computers on campus being the size of a room.  I had very little exposure to computers, one class with the punch cards, senior year but it was a graduate level course through the history department about research.

This meme came to ActiveRain via a tag from a Columbus green blogger.

Missy - guess there ARE some others who do not frequent movies. I have seen some good ones at home but very few where I wish I had seen them in the theatre. But there is a new theatre in Los Angeles (of course) where you sit on couches in the theatre to watch - my daughter insists that the next time we come up we are heading to the movies. Cool with me...unless it's the Simpsons or some other drudgery. There are also some where you can sit at a table and have a meal. What a racket.

Hi Jeff, I think I learned a lot about you here! I agree with you completely, there is something peaceful and zen like about being able to read a magazine in bed or on the porch in the quiet that you cannot duplicate on line. That is not a knock on technology, just a fact.

We are also similar about commercials.  I do watch TV however, but I can go days without doing so. You had an Atari, I had an Apple IIe -- I love Bon Appetit and used to have a subscription. I'm thinking a five year AR reunion at your house with you cooking :-)

Very intrigued about the art collecting! You have an interesting life, Mr. Dowler!

Carole - now that could be fun! I love to cook...and eat. And we have artwork all over the house, adnin three closets since there is not enough room - it's almost an obsession.

This was fun to write even tho' it took me forever to get started. Not sure why. It just sort of flowed once I started.

Heard my first BeaTles song on a "transistor" radio about the size of a pack of cigs......."I wanna hold your hand, yea yea yea......I thought Frogger was the largest leap in technology since the 8 track in my car....great fun, thanks, DavidC

I have a photo of pong on my pingoat post here too; what I recall about it was two discordant things; one was wonderment that it existed; two was how it felt like peering into a black hole LOL. I was not completely happy until pac man came out. I recall getting up one and a half hrs early (and I am NOT a morning person) to get to work so I could hit the pac man machine in the cafe on first floor for a half hr before work! Now you don't suppose I have an addictive personality do you? :-)

Hey Jeff, looks like I missed your meme post.  This is great!  Atari - oh boy!  Remember that.

I have a TREO650 and am pretty happy about it.  Would love to get an IPhone, but there are so many restrictions with buying it.  You lose curernt biling discounts, other crazy stuff like that and it doesn't work with Supra Keys.  I guess I'll just wait on this one.  :-)
