What the heck is an OODA Loop?

The OODA Loop was originally applied to military strategy but has since been used in most every application from sports to business. In fact, you subconsciously perform an OODA Loop hundreds of times a day without even knowing that you are doing it.

So let's get to it.  OODA = Observe, Orient, Decide, Act.

Observe – Gather data. Orient – Put all that data into context.  Decide – Make decision you are comfortable with. Act – Take action.

Here's an example of an OODA Loop you performed on your commute to your last appointment

  1. Observe - You're driving a high performance vehicle; police don't usually patrol this area; You've been trained in high speed maneuvers; Brake lights appear ahead; traffic is heavy; only the shoulder is not blocked
  2. Orient - If you get caught in a traffic jam you will miss your appointment with the biggest client of your life, so you can slow down OR whip around the traffic by driving on the shoulder.
  3. Decide - You will take evasive action and drive on the shoulder to get around the blockage.
  4. Act - Put the pedal to the metal!

The question now is, "How do I apply this OODA thing to my real estate business?"

  1. Observe - I've been an agent for 10 years; I've always relied on sign calls for new business; the overall number of transactions are lowerer than ever; I need to close more business
  2. Orient - My number of sales is dwindling; customers want my website address to search on their iPhone; What's an iPhone?
  3. Decide - This internet thing is NOT going away! I better get on the band wagon soon.
  4. Build a great web presence and once again reclaim your title as top agent.

So, what's your OODA Loop?
