59 Comments on PLEASE Don't Pee in the Pool!
All the pee jokes made me laugh so hard I had to pee, good thing I was not however in a pool at the time. Great analogy and glad to hear that you were able to make it to Sellabration. I went for the first time in Hawaii in 2008 and I need to make a point of making it part of my to-do list starting next year. Have fun!
Jeff great title, and points well made. Yes it is important for us to be careful about our on-line activities, most importantly not being a source of irritation to others.
Loved it! Play nice ~AND~ Do Unto Others as you would have them do unto you! All the golden rules in one lump some. Nice job!!!
One of my biggest irritations is the invites I get on Facebook for a meeting in who knows where.
The other one is when you meet a Realtor and she adds you to her drip newsletter for who knows where.
STOP IT!
Leave it to Brian to come up with that description.
Jeff - Wow! I didn't know that you can put peeing in the pool and social media on the same page. Getting invites for open houses across the state one of my pet peeves.
Great analogy
That was a real attention getter! I agree with Missy that getting invited to every event taking place across the planet on Facebook is something I just don't get!
Thanks Jeff. I would also like to contibute that for some reason REALTORS® believe that permission based marketing never existed or has been repealed. It is modified somewhat but when my email inbox is flooded with a my new listing, my price reduction, my brokers open, and my open house it makes me grateful for Outlook. Just right click and go to the junk mail part of the window, click on add to blocked senders and voila, no more agent spammed inbox. If I have a client in a particular area and price range and your house is the best, I will show it.
William - LOL. Some folks do it intentionally.
Lynda - not sure I did. It was on-stop day and night. I haven't seen the video
Bill - clearly folks don't use lists or just are not thinking about what they are doing. I get that all the.
Gene - yeah, their names would turn bright red or something. But at least it's pretty obvious.
Rebecca - ah, it worked!!
Cheryl - THERE'S an idea. But it would still look bad. But don't you really WANT to do that sometimes?
Pamela - I appreciate the compliment.
Brian - Love it. That's sage advice.
Sharon - thanks. Glad you enjoyed it. But I can't take credit for the title - it was a quote...I just used it.
SarahGray - LOL. I sorta thought the same. Or red.
Jeff
Peeing in the pool can be a crass thing, but if I can carry the analogy a little further: I get more upset when someone pees on my shoes.
The Social Media explosion is still very new and many (most?) of us are trying to figure out the best ways to utilize cyberspace. I'm always concerned that I may become annoying, and end up "peeing in the pool."
Jeff, thanks for reminding me that the title is one of the most important elements if you want your blog post to be read. The same applies to newletters sent via email.
Jeff There is no question that social media is running with no real control - that willchange
Great post Jeff! It is so much sweeter hearing good things about your service from someone else. I've never had a conversation with someone who went on and on about how great they are. As should be with Social Media. There is plenty of mutual admiration (especially in AR) to go around without having to brag. Thanks for the post!!
Sugar and Spice and very thing nice is not the make up of real estate agents. Just saying.
Hey if you have any referrals for Las Vegas, you know where to find me :wink wink wink:
I really don't have too much of a problem because I have public comments off so my spam factor is light! I probably delete a comment less than five fingers a year because of the rules you mentioned above plus some of my own rules (no personal attacks). I love debate but there is no room in my world to go after someone personally!
Jeff....
I will never forget the "Sea of Yellow" that forms when one lets go in the pool......adults swim away from it and with kids..... when asked "did you pee in the pool" will look you in the eye and say...NO. As to the Social etiquette you describe, until we all get on the same page, posts like yours are necessary....thank you
Jeff
Good solid information one can use right away to avoid peeing in the pool; I suppose we could put some indicator in the pool.
Jane - it's a shame it has to be said, but there it is.
Irene - I do think some of what we see is not ill-intentioned.
Gary - LOL. Better that you DID quit, but a good point about the social world
Patricia - glad you enjoyed it. I liked writing it, even though it's a shame we have to worry about this stuff. Fortunately, in the overall scheme of things it does not happen very much.
Damon - copy and paste, among other no nos.
Dave - well there's an idea. You might suggest it. Oh you just did. A little like the complain websites out there.
Jane - some of the issues are really more of the "selling yourself" and spamming as opposed to really egregious behavior.
Jeff
People don't care how much you know they care how much you care , Capiche?
Great title. Especially considering that even without ever asking, you just KNOW some people will always pee in the pool! We need the red dye that's shown in the new Adam Sandler movie for when the ADULTS pee in the pool, and the kids are telling them not to do it!
And..."Being rude, sexist, ridiculing, telling lies, name calling Stealing"... *SIGH!!!* I know of some people who are actually proud of being this way! So let me RE-name them a bit... "Obnoxious, Ignorant, Insecure, Untrustworthy and Unethical, Thieves". Did I cover them all? If I could stoop to their level, I'd go post this on their blogs. But I have more class than that. However, I do believe a re-blog is in order! And perhaps a feature suggestion? >=)
Already featued! YES! :-D
Jeff, I agree with most of what you say.
Regarding blabbing about listings and open houses, those people are trying to market their listings to the public through the Active Rain Google Juice, so I'm not sure that would be considered peeing in the pool.
